The Weekend – It's good to have options

And just like that once again we've made it to the weekend. Rest easy and plan accordingly.

Make sure to check out this week's podcast, which is a quick click in the player on your right. I can assure you it was made with the finest herbs and spices.

FRIDAY

  • FUUUUUUNKY. From the people who brought you YACHT ROCK, comes a night of nothing but straight funky beats and dance music at the White Heart. This time boat shoes, beards and captains hats are not required. Funk rolls out at 9 p.m.
  • The Human Rights Film Festival wraps up its run at SPACE Gallery this weekend with shows at 7p.m. tonight through Sunday, as well as 3 p.m. matinées. Showing Saturday night and Sunday afternoon is Strange Culture, the bizarre and sad story of professor and artist Steve Kurtz, whose life was changed forever the day the FBI took him into custody as suspected bio-terrorist – the same day his wife died of a heart attack.

SATURDAY

  • Today could quite possibly be one of my favorite days of the year – the annual WMPG Record Sale. Sure you can get most albums remastered with great sound quality on CD or online, but sometimes nothing beats vinyl. For DJs, collectors and music fiends, the record sale is rich with possibilities. Looking for a rare overseas edition, a limited release, out of print or otherwise hard to find record? Get there early. Sale begins at 10 a.m. at Sullivan Gym on the University of Southern Maine Portland Campus. It's $1 to get in and the sale runs until 4 p.m. If you can't get there early you still win - as the afternoon wears on, the price of the records will drop.
  • Tonight over at the Ford Auditorium at Portland High School the Mayhem Poets are performing as part of the PCA Great Performances. The New Jersey/NYC–based poets are a blend of spoken word, slam poetry and hip–hop. Tickets are only $10 and available at Merrill Auditorium and through PortTix. Show starts at 7 p.m.
  • State Radio is coming to The Station tonight, along with Australian group The Beautiful Girls. The Boston–based band is little like an evolved college band (not saying college bands aren't good), with a mix of crowd rock, jams, and socially conscious songs. Head over to their MySpace page to listen to a few songs. It's an ALL AGES ALERT, so doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 and available at Bull Moose, Strawberries and Ticketweb.

Finally, your video love for the week, comes once again from the people over at College Humor. Thank goodness someone is scouring the interwebs for gems like these.

Remember kids, gang violence is real. And dangerous. And FABULOUS!

Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the Monday Magazine.

If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture," covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.

Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer, redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life would sound like.

When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain America.

Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and what they do.
