The Weekend - Werewolf Bar Mitzvah Edition

Sorry for the late weekend primer today, I've been working on last-minute costume ideas for the weekend.

Right now its down to naughty nurse, naughty cat or naughty reporter.

Since the calendar has been uncooperative the last couple of years, Halloween has typically played out the weekend before the kids go panhandling for treats.

Remember to wear something reflective on your costume and don't eat (or drink) anything that looks like it's been tampered with.

Look for me out this weekend as under appreciated Blaxploitation hero - "Black Liberace."

Oh yes, I have a script in the works.

FRIDAY

  • There may not be a perfect category for British band Tunng, which is appearing tonight at SPACE Gallery. Imagine if separate parts of your music collection started hanging out together without you, like the electronic and club music with the acoustic singer-songwriter stuff. It's all a little moody, and you kinda like it. To listen to a few clips, head over to Tunng's site. Along for the fun tonight are Modern Syndrome. Show begins at 9:30 p.m., tickets are $7 for the 18 plus show.
  • Doesn't "Masquerade Ball" have a better sound to it than "Costume Party?" Of course masquerade ball brings to mind the idea of women in gigantic dresses and guys in white powdered wigs and leggings. ANYWAY, over at One Longfellow Square tonight is the Cosmic Masquerade, featuring Montroller, Dreamosaic and White House on Trial along with promised special guests. Tickets are $3 and the fun starts at 8 p.m.
  • There's a new twist on 80s night at Bubba's tonight...alternative 80s. Sure we all love the 80s for the ridiculousness and excess of the rock and pop scene, but let us not forget the New Wave and underground scene. Head to the back room to get a taste of Depeche Mode, The Smiths, and yes, a little BauHaus. Also tonight is apparently "Prom Night," which guarantees that someone will be making out, in stages of trying to have sex and then meet a horrible fate...all to the music of Oingo Bongo and WHAM! Things get started at 9 p.m., and as always, costumes are encouraged.

SATURDAY

  • A very special Halloween blow-out at Geno's tonight, featuring one of the only By Blood Alone shows you're likely to see this year. The band is celebrating the release of its new album, "Sea of Blood," but more than that, they're anticipating the return of frontwoman supreme, Cruella, who is known in some quarters as Melynda Amann. As you may recall Amann is undergoing treatment for breast cancer, which was just diagnosed this summer.

The band has largely put things on hold until Amann completes treatment, so tonight's show will not be one to miss. Also on board are Pigboat and Big Coffin Hunters. Things get started at 9 p.m.

  • LabSeven is set to get its monster mash on tonight at the Big Easy. OK, sorry for the pun, but someone had to say it. Expect lab coats, PBR and animated corpses. Also the Boomsquad will be in the house as well as Massachusetts-based Problemaddicts. Show starts at 9 p.m., costumes are invited.
  • Over at The Station (ALL AGES ALERT) WCYY is throwing a Halloween bash (their words, not mine), featuring the musical stylings of Twisted Roots, Sidecar Radio, Hiss and Chambers, Headstart and Highway Jackson. Doors are at 7 p.m., tickets are $10. Now that may seem early to start partying, but keep this in mind - $500 Best Costume Contest. That can buy a decent amount of something. Maybe beer. Maybe gummy bears.

Finally, this week's video love is off-site.
First off, here's "Werewolf Bar Mitzvah." Enjoy.

With Halloween coming up and so many choices out there, what do you do when you need a costume? Girls Costume Warehouse is what you do! Ladies, he has everything you might possibly need to have a fun and dignified holiday.

(Note - contains blue language. NSFW and earmuffs for the kids)

Happy Hallo-Weekend!

Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the Monday Magazine.

If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture," covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.

Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer, redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life would sound like.

When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain America.

Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and what they do.
