Be careful what you lose
You know that feeling you get when you misplace something - keys, a sweater, the remote - that sort of instant, low-level panic that never really leads to a freak out, but instead annoyance?
After a while you may give up looking for it in the hopes that it will reveal itself over time.
But what about the stuff that never gets found? What about the stuff that has passing significance? A quick note to a friend, some thoughts scribbled on a napkin, or that picture of you next to a cut-out of Huey Lewis?
You better hope it doesn't make its way to FOUND Magazine.
Last week at Pop!Tech Davy Rothbart, co-creator and editor of FOUND, showed up to give the audience a taste of just what the magazine is all about by offering up a few of his favorite finds.
Some of you may already know about FOUND, either because you are a reader or you may have caught Rothbart when he was in Portland a month ago as part of FOUND's 65-city tour.
If you are not familiar with FOUND, first off, do yourself a favor and check out the the Web site. The magazine collects what all of us lose, throw away, or just wish we had forgotten about.
When I was at Pop!Tech the idea was to try and find someone to talk to for this week's podcast, but when I saw Rothbart was around, I knew it had to be him.
But it almost didn't work out.
Just prior to lunch I caught up with him and we agreed to meet shortly after he was done talking to people, promoting FOUND and shaking some hands. Of course, 10 minutes later, I couldn't find him. After waiting a few minutes my hunger got the best of me so I went to lunch.
Luckily after lunch we literally ran into each other before the afternoon sessions began, so we sat down to talk in a stairwell just under the stage at the Camden Opera House.
We talked about why people would actually send things to FOUND, what the things we lose say about us, and whether there are things that are too weird for FOUND.
Many, many thanks to Davy Rothbart for spending a few minutes talking. Also, thanks as always go out to Dr. No, for providing the beats for this week's show.
I am always looking for more music to showcase on the podcast, so get in touch with me if you or your group has some new songs they'd like to get out there.
Also we're always looking for show ideas and other suggestions. You can e-mail me or IM me (JustinNXT) if you've got ideas.
