Blasting away on waves of sound

We here at NXT are big fans of the old timey radio program "Car Talk," and really, it is this fine show that we wish to emulate in all of our broadcast endeavors.

Actually, we're big fans of Chicago Public Radio's "This American Life," but that has less bearing over the sound and aesthetic of the Podcast as "Car Talk."

ANYWAY...if you pay attention to the handy dandy NXT Pod Center™ at your right, you'll notice a new podcast is ready. ENJOY IT!

Sorry for the yelling.

If you recall last week was the iHerald/NXT blow-out-the-budget coverage of the launch of Halo 3.

If you think I went out to the mall at 11 p.m., forsaking the comforts of my TV and High Life, in solidarity of Halo nation, you are somewhat mistaken. I did have to get a first hand look at this affliction, but I also brought a digital recorder with me, and "Car Talk" style, chatted up the assembled, waiting horde.

As I mentioned previously, these guys were fired up, partially because of their love for the series (because you would have to be in order to stay up for a midnight opening), but also because of the healthy supply of Red Bull.

I am not shy of the Red Bull, (well there was that one time,) but it was hard to resist that sickly sweet smell and promise of energy that the RB would provide for late-night reporting. What was just as appealing with the idea of getting sleep when my adventure was over.

Though it's been a week since the launch - and don't worry, Microsoft made its money - a big question still remains: how does the series produce such devotion?

So here you have it - Halo Nation in their own words, mostly - about why they like the series, why they're standing in a largely empty parking lot, and their plans for work and school.

You know, now that I think about it, maybe I'm getting "Car Talk" confused with something else.

Thanks and gratitude for music in this week's podcast goes to Dr. No, beat fiend that he is. Much thanks Doc, I am in your debt.

If you've got an idea for the show, a name, or want to get your music on the show, e-mail me or IM me at JustinNXT.

Good podcast. Now I know what the kids do while I sleep. But, I must be honest, this is much more This American Life than Car Talk (of course that is a big compliment from me).

Maybe JE and VPJ can be the Car Talk of DvDs, that seems like a good fit.

Also, Dr. No!! Niiice.

Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the Monday Magazine.

If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture," covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.

Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer, redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life would sound like.

When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain America.

Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and what they do.
