Think Local
Enough with the Halo 3 news already, we get it.
Yes, we're moving on, gentle reader, to matters with significantly less galactic implications.
We're thinking local.
Tonight the folks over at The White Heart and are throwing their support behind much loved local scenester/promoter/rocktress/friend Melynda Amann.
As you may recall from earlier this month, Amann was diagnosed with breast cancer this summer and does not have health insurance. Earlier this month friends, bands and local artists got together to support Amann with a two-night show at Geno's that raised somewhere around $6,000.
Tonight there's a silent auction over at the White Heart starting at 7 p.m., featuring plenty of works by local artists. Make sure to stop by, do some bidding, and have a PBR - all proceeds from the night will be going to helping out Amann.
Meanwhile, over at SPACE, Cult Maze, Cochise, Ocean and Brzowksi will be playing starting at 9 p.m. It's a $5 donation, which will also be going to help out Amann.
If you want to find out more about how to help, the show, or how Melynda's doing, head on over to BenefitforMeylnda.org for updates.
Speakeasy
On another front tonight, if you're feeling dapper and are in the mood for some serious cocktails, The Speakeasy is taking place tonight over at the Portland Company Warehouse.
The Speakeasy is a benefit for the Portland Music Foundation, and begins at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $25, but the money will all be going to the PMF.
You may be asking, what does that $25 get me, and that is a valid question. Aside from the joy of knowing you are helping out local musicians who you probably know and love, you also get the chance to Suit Up, and enjoy tasty appetizers and some high-end drinks, including Johnnie Walker blue and green label, and Ciroc vodka.
Make sure to stay tuned for more PMF events in the future, including a kick-off planned for next month
Welcome to GeorgeSaundersland
Thursday night at SPACE, The Telling Room is presenting an evening with writer George Saunders, author of fictional works such as CivilWarLand in Bad Decline, and the children's book The Very Persistent Gappers of Frip.
The reading will begin at 7:30 p.m., doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $7, with all proceed going to the Telling Room.
The nonprofit Telling Room helps mentor young writers and storytellers in the Portland area. Offering writing workshops in schools, field trips and publishing opportunities, the program relies on the help of volunteers and local writers.
You may recall the Story House project from earlier this year, where the Telling Room worked with local high school students from immigrant families writing about their experience coming to America.
