Well, as Kenny Loggins (and Michael McDonald) once said, "This Is It."
This, of course, being the end of summer. On Sunday it will officially be Autumn, which I am ok with.
I'll admit I'm a fan of fall - you're not sweating through your clothes, or obsessively bundling yourself up just to make it through the day. Plus there's college football, the NFL, baseball playoffs, fall TV, autumn beer, the list goes on.
Wow. I just went all PBS on you guys. Uh, let's get on to the Weekend...
FRIDAY
Singer/songwriter Sara Cox plays 1 Longfellow Square at 8 p.m. tonight, with bandmates Nate Schrock, Chicky Stoltz, Steve Jones and Megan Jo Wilson. It's $8 at the door. Cox's most recent album, "Crowded is the New Lonely," was released this summer and is available on her Web site, but you can take a listen to a few songs on her MySpace page.
Continuing on the theme of women who rock, head down to the White Heart tonight to catch Dominique Lise starting at 9 p.m.
Over at the Big Easy, rockers Sidecar Radio is headlining and making promises to mix up the old and the new for their eager fans. Paneside and Street Credit are also playing, beginning at 9 p.m.
SATURDAY
Stop down in Deering Oaks Park this afternoon for Local Harmony a benefit concert to raise money and awareness about the ongoing conflict in the Darfur region of Sudan. Featuring music from bands such as the Reggae group Stream, Dear Claudia and Jake Roche, the afternoon will also have speakers from the Fur Cultural Revival, Friends of Darfur and the Divestment from Darfur campaign. The concerts starts at 3 p.m. and is free, but donations are gladly accepted.
It's the second bout of the season for Maine Roller Derby, this time against the Pioneer Valley Roller Derby team. At the first bout earlier this month around 700 fans showed up for a good time. So you guys know the drill, get there early, doors are at 5 p.m., skating starts at 6 p.m. Tickets are $10, and available at Bull Moose and the MRD web site. And oh, the best part ... victory/after party at Amigos, which means PBR pitchers a plenty.
The SPACE Gallery is turning 5 years old, and tonight they're throwing a party/benefit. Matt Rock, Kate Cox and dilly dilly will be playing. The party's titled "Icing," and appropriately enough, there will also be delectable, enviable treats from local bakeries and restaurants like Aurora Provisions, Two Fat Cats, Rabelais and Scratch Bakery. Head over to the SPACE web site to get ticket info.
A nice double-bill show down at the Big Easy tonight. You can check out Phantom Buffalo and Hiss & Chambers starting at 9 p.m.
Finally, your end of the week video comes courtesy of NXT reader Réal, who discovered this awesomeness on the Interwebs this week. On first impression this seems impossibly fake, but after watching it for a few seconds it becomes very, very real, and almost mesmerizing. Make sure to go to the YouTube page and check out more clips.
Cute kids and sick turntable skills, why aren't advertisers and TV executives kicking down their door already?
All I can say is those kids will be crushing other DJs by the time they are in high school. We can only hope Timberland or Mark Ronson don't get to them first.
Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove
it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine
Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the
Monday Magazine.
If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture,"
covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college
debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music
scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa
Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.
Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of
Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer,
redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life
would sound like.
When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain
America.
Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and
what they do.
