Special Guest: AC knows what Portland needs

It's another Friday, which means I get to kick back for a bit and let the readers do the work.
Though it's been a slow week, commenter AC came through in the end, largely due to her love of "Teen Wolf." And who among us would not wear a "Wolf Buddy" T-shirt?

Behold, AC, your Commenter of the Week, and she has a plan to make Portland just a little better...

Wait, wait! Don’t roll your eyes and think “oh good, here comes another liberal blogger with some idea about how to improve our schools by making 2:00pm mandatory hug time or stop global warming by replacing Exchange Street with a field of daisies.’ No, no, dear readers, my idea for Portland is strictly about a new way for some of us to have some fun.

Get ready…what Portland needs is...Craft Night…at a bar!

First and foremost I should say this idea did not originate in my head, DJ Gabe FM and his lovely wife Molly FM planted it there. But ever since then, it’s been stuck in my mind, and I’m hardly what you would call “crafty.” I don’t sit at home in the evening knitting dog sweaters wishing someone would serve me a draft beer. (Note to my dog though, if you want a homemade sweater, consider installing a tap). As much as a talk a big game every November, I never end up creating my own Christmas gifts. But still, craft night, that’s something I could get behind.

A simple Google search reveals other cities are already doing this. (Hard to believe, I know, that Portland could be behind on something). A bar in New York called Stain Wine Bar (www.stainbar.com) offers a “talent optional” craft night on Mondays where they offer supplies and a place to collaborate with other artists. Akbar, in Los Angeles, hosts weekly lessons (www.crafthead.com) reminiscent of childhood art projects, like collages or this week’s back to school pencil toppers. One of the rules for participants is you are never allowed to say your piece is crap.

Picture with me a night where we could gather and have a couple Geary’s Autumn Ales while creating something. Maybe you have talent you would like to share, or maybe you can barely doodle a cat in your notebook but have a desire use your hands for more than mouse clicking. Portland needs this. And The Snug, I’m looking at you.

I think this is a pretty great idea. What venues would be good for this in addition to The Snug? Any other ideas?

She raises some good points. You combine anything with beer drinking and it becomes an American pastime.

What we need is a cheap bar with big tables that isn't too busy during the week ... and serves cheap pitchers of PBR ... and gives off the occasional whiff of vomit, but not to fear because you can always go outside on the patio to smoke your cigarettes to cover up the stench. Guesses anyone?

Alex other bars I can think of are...North Star cafe, Free Street (don't know what their new set up is like, though)..Blue? Pizza Villa when it isn't game night?

Floors have to be easy to sweep and the tables have to be many. hmmm...week night at bubba's?

Congratulations AC, from the desk of the very first COTW! I will have my assistant put an autographed head shot in the postbox - please find it a nice frame.

Sincerely,
Jonathan

Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the Monday Magazine.

If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture," covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.

Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer, redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life would sound like.

When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain America.

Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and what they do.
