Special Guest: Alex prepares for the waiting world

I think we might be onto something with this Commenter of the Week thing. In the second week we've now attracted more comments, more votes, and overall created a bigger community here at NXT. In short, it means you don't have to listen to me prattle on constantly.

It was a close contest, with the Canadian (Jonathan) nearly getting the title for the second week, but Alex pulled out the victory and is you Commenter of the Week.

Read his words and know the end of college is nigh...

Heroes:

Jose Bove
Herbert Marcuse
James Baldwin
Howard Zinn
Resisters to the orthodoxy of "production"
Opposers to the status quo everywhere

I am a week out of college--it only took me 6 years to complete--and I've been to this Portland and little Portland, Ontario and I once moved to San Francisco for 6 hours when I was 18. This was immediately before I moved home and then came here to Portland. I've been to Palestine and the Balkans. I've dropped out here and there, always to return as a stronger student--more hungry to learn than ever before.

This is the point where my father and other adults look at my future and prepares for me to go to law school. They wait for the birth of a professional, something they never had a chance to be. I'm looking forward to doing something else that my father in particular never had a chance to devote a lifetime to, and I hope you'll join me. Let us--and I am serious--join together and beat this war machine.

Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the Monday Magazine.

If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture," covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.

Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer, redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life would sound like.

When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain America.

Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and what they do.
