The Weekend: Roll film - playing with jerks, killer bees and Marimba Ponies
So looking back, what have we learned this week? Don't force underclassmen to drink and leak your own incriminating photos? Politicians can get picky if you stick a camera in their face? Even the biggest party girls have to settle down at some point?
ANYWAY, it's Friday, so that means it's time to cut loose. Out of this list, I plan to do one, possibly two. Your guess:
- Go see Superbad cause I can't get enough Rogen in my diet/
- Enjoy a refreshing cocktail at Local 188's sumptuous new digs. (Already did it, but why not go again?)
- Catch the Sea Dogs play the Twins AA affiliate, the New Britain Rock Cats
- Head down to the Old Port. Rumor has it that a benefit event is being held at the Lava Lounge that will include Marines, a few DJs, a rock band, a couple of Hummers and Jagermeister girls.
It's like a choose your own adventure out there.
FRIDAY
On the Clock The48 Hour Film Project officially kicks off tonight and runs through Sunday. Last I heard there were around 20 teams in the field, including returning champs Sputnik Animation. If you want to find out more or check out the competition, there's a kick-off tonight over at RiRa starting at 6 p.m.
Your Rock Fix A serious rock bill over at Genos tonight, with the heavy guitar blues of Meantone with guest bassist Johnny Custom, and the Brooklyn metal band Dealer are playing Genos tonight with the Pontiffs starting at 9 p.m. If it's been a long week and you feel the need to cut loose with some hard, loud, beer-glass-rattling rock, then this is probably for you. It's a $6 entry
The Jerks Do Amigos Remember a few weeks back when I kept talking about what makes for a good summer time bar. This would be one of those occasions. The bluegrass mainstay Jerks of Grass are playing outside at Amigos tonight. Amigos' deck has a lot going for it (location and an outside bar go a long way) but as we all know, the music can kill a good time or put things over the top. It's hard not to enjoy the brand of bluegrass the Jerks play, and the fun they have while doing it. If the weather stays solid it should make for a good combination.
SATURDAY
Return to the 36 Chambers Sometimes its easy to get sick of nostalgia. You can get tired of cover bands and classic rock, it happens to everyone once in a while. But Boondocks has been on to a good thing over the last year, taking audiences down hip-hop's memory lane. Dr. Dre, Notorious BIG, and now The Wu-Tang Clan. Praised, feared and imitated by many, the Wu have a singular legacy in hip-hop and pretty much took the music to the next level in the 90s. The Killer Bees will swarm tonight. Show starts at 9 p.m., it's $5 to get in.
Speaking of Nostalgia It's Baystock, which means unless you're all about the music festival on the Maine State Pier, it may be best to avoid the area. The Black Crowes have returned from ... wherever it is 90s bands go when they don't have a catastrophic break-up and are headlining this year. They'll be playing with Grace and the Nocturnals and Mervelle Searles. If you haven't gotten your tickets already make sure to get to the Pier by noon when they go on sale.
Night of the Waxmen If you are a fan of bluesy, soul music this weekend presents not one but two chances to check out Adam and the Waxmen I hesitate to use the phrase R&B to describe them because that can be a loaded phrase for some people. But they seem to put a lot of rhythm, blues, soul and rock into their act. Friday night they play at the Big Easy at 9 p.m. Tonight they are at Bubbas at 9 p.m.
Clash of the Beatmakers Tonight over at The White Heart one of Portland's resident techno and house music fiends, j.hjort has a friendly face-off with Lord Base of Trance Lab notoriety. It's a gentleman's dual, so plan for martinis. Show's up at 9 p.m.
Finally, your YouTube send-off for the weekend. Thanks to everyone who keeps sending in links for the scanner, stories and videos. How else can I explain "Marimba Ponies?"

it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine
Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the
Monday Magazine.
If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture,"
covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college
debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music
scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa
Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.
Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of
Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer,
redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life
would sound like.
When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain
America.
Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and
what they do.
