Does it scare anyone else that we're almost at Labor Day? Where did my summer go? What happen to the times out on the deck at Amigos, or the meat-sweat inducing grill-offs? What about the car chases?
I think the one sure sign that things are over - not leaves turning or tourists packing up there wallets - but the switch over from summer to autumn beer - yes Geary's, I'm looking at you.
Just keep an eye out for it if you don't believe me.
Also, am I the only one upset that Michael McDonald canceled? The man gave us "Sweet Freedom" and "Yah Mo Be There!" He is musician of the highest order, and has excellent facial hair.
Also, without THIS HIT, ( classic!) what would Warren G and Nate Dogg have done?
FRIDAY
To the PAIN Over at Blue tonight Samuel James will engage in another blues deathmatch, this time against MeantoneI don't know if Mr. James has an Evil Knievel complex, or just wants to prove his supremacy in steel cage-like fashion, but he seems to challenge people a lot. Show starts at 8 p.m. at Blue on Congress.
Renegades of Funk Last month the Eclectic Collective came to town with Slick Rick, now they're back headlining their own show. They're playing with The Press, starting at 9 p.m.
Stay Legal Graffiti as art - it's something I've mentioned from time to time in this blog, tonight over at Cream you can take a look. The sneaker boutique is hosting the work of Lerk, starting at 6 p.m.
SATURDAY
The only biker club allowed in townThe Black Rebel Motorcycle Club is playing the Asylum tonight, with local opener As Fast As.
BRMC is touring off of their new release, "Baby 81," and is sure to bring out all the garage, indie rock fans to pack the Asylum. Combine that with the As Fast As' rising star, and that should account for some organized chaos. It's a 21 plus show, starts at 8 p.m.
Meanwhile Really is there any better segue than "meanwhile?" Over at Geno's tonight it's a storm of punk and metal, as Balls Deep, Pig Boat and Man-Witch are lined up. The show starts at 9 p.m. and is only $5. Isn't it great having local venues that see the value of a cheap ticket?
Speaking of which, the Arts District will pretty much be Rock Row tonight. If you feel like show hopping, Dominic and the Lucid are at the White Heart starting at 9 p.m. and down at Space Gallery Conifer is playing with Capillary Action. Doors at 9 p.m., it's $7 to get in.
If soul and hip-hop is more your speed, Affiliate and Nigel Hall will be at the Big Easy, along with Ill Natural and Lyle Divinksy. The show caps off the charity 3-on-3 basketball tournament WRED 95.9 is sponsoring today. Show starts at 9 p.m.
Finally, here's your YouTube clip 'O the day, thanks to...a TV Station? I did not believe this was real the first time I watched it, but sure enough, this comes from Fox 11 in LA. It's a little long, but worth it. Make no mistake, the Internets are a dangerous place...beware elite l33t haxors. They will come for your MySpace, your puppies, your daughters and then you.
Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove
it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine
Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the
Monday Magazine.
If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture,"
covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college
debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music
scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa
Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.
Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of
Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer,
redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life
would sound like.
When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain
America.
Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and
what they do.
