Harry Potter and the apathetic blogger

Muggle what? Seriously, I have no idea what you people are talking about and I don’t care who eats a magical bullet in the new book.

Ok, maybe that was a little harsh – (especially from a man who debated the merits of "Transformers" – which was awesome by the way.) but I have remained largely immune to Potter-mania over the last few years.

But I think it got to the boiling point last night when even my mother asked me if I planned to read the new book. (I think she was joking.)

Still, I will admit that the series is great if it encourages kids to read - it’s still probably more socially acceptable than comic books – but the cult-like following can be scary.

For those of you who have drank the Potter Kool-Aid, the news that parts of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows" leaked online must be conflicting. Do you dare look?

One thing is certain, Daniel Radcliffe likes the fame, and don’t mind the ladies that come with it. Mothers, hide your daughters, that Harry is a cad!

Along the same lines Randball, one of my favorite sports blogs, raise an interesting question – what movies do you get lady-gorilla crazy over if your friends have not seen?

I have been chewed out by many a friend for not having seen or read any of Mr. Potter’s adventures.

Then again, I go nuts if someone has not seen "The Big Lebowski" or "Clerks." Or "Road House," "Gymkata," or "Baseketball."

Moving on...

Maine’s College Republicans have been recognized again as the best state federation in America. The award goes to the statewide group that does the best job mobilizing members to work on campus issues and statewide politics. The group also received the award in 2004.

Lastly two developments in tech news coming out today:

- Hello Kitty...you just saved my life! Would you believe that the cute iconic Japanese character’s reach goes beyond just toys, candy, dolls, clothing, video games, etc, but now into personal electronics? More than that, when disaster strikes, who would have thought Hello Kitty would be there?

- If the point of cell phones is to always be able to reach your friends and family, then why not up the stakes by LoJacking them? Sprint is becoming the first of the big cell phone companies to offer “friend finding” technology on its phones. Basically, using Global Positioning System chips in phones, you’ll be able to find anyone, anytime!

Now before you start drawing up stalking plans for that ex-girlfriend/boyfriend, your friends have to agree to the service.

Still, when you’re trying to locate your friends during a night on the town, this could be handy. And emergencies too, I guess.

Re: the friend finding

OK, can you imagine the conversations between significant others?

"Why don't you want me to be able to locate you on my cellphone?"

Or this line from a movie:

"Love means never having to see your GPS signal."

you're right about people taking it all too seriously, etc. i made a note about the new movie facebook, and a fanatic got back to me with the intensity. when i jokingly noted that "the black guy" had the one token-black guy line, i was corrected and told to read the book. i then posted a picture of daniel r. from the play he was in where he's naked and there's a horse, and this girl asked why i put that picture up. i put it up because he's naked and there's a horse.

to be honest, i'd rather have kids reading this than something crazy like the bible. at least (most) people don't take it literally like that other piece of work. fortunately, no one has begun pushing legislation that excludes any particular group because they take the fight against he who must not named too seriously.

and why do these magicians celebrate christmas in the h. potter movies? the christians assimilated all of the pagan holidays and i'd still be irritated about it 2000 or so years later.

anywho- the phoenix noted on the front page that the new movie dumps the plot in exchange for action. good. that's the only reason i go. i saw the last movie in the theater and it reminded me of a tool video so i was excited to see this one. i saw the first two and swore i'd never see another one again, but i saw the last one because of a girl, and this one because the action scenes and special effects are really awesome.

in case it isn't obvious, i haven't read the books.

The flip side of freaking out on people for not seeing a movie (all my friends are surely sick of me yelling at them to see Knocked Up) it can be hard to admit to said freaker outers when you somehow managed to get through life without seeing movies like The Big Lebowski (me).

Not sure what I am missing with Gymkata though.....

Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the Monday Magazine.

If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture," covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.

Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer, redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life would sound like.

When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain America.

Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and what they do.
