The Weekend: A laff riot, funky beats and journalism’s breaking point
I feel like we should have a conversation with my Celtics fans out there. Seriously, how do you feel today? I want to be there for you?
In a draft where you can make the case that most teams made out OK – nice job T-wolves on Corey Brewer and not selling Kevin Garnett for magic beans and an autographed photo of Dwayne Wade – how do you trade away your draft pick and a promising guard for a guard in his 30s?
Bird-up: Tonight over at Space Gallery rapper Bleubird is playing with Jesse Dangerously and DJ Mayonnaise and The BLOB (Alt and Bread together as one hip-hop world-eater.)
Down from the wilds of Canada, Bleubird is a hungry rapper, ready to throw punches and tell the truth, even if it hurts. If you had to put a label on him it would be "indie rapper," if that actually means anything.
Tonight’s show looks to be a burner, especially if what Space’s Web site says about Dangerously is true: "Dangerously’s influences include the lilting hyperspeed of Chip Fu; the pop culture whirlwind of Das Efx; the indignance and unabashed political overtones of Public Enemy; the intricate rhyme schemes of Lord Finesse; and the cocky arrogance of teenaged LL Cool J or Fresh Prince."
And of course, don’t sleep on local heads Mayonnaise, Alt and Bread.
Tickets are $5. The 18+ show starts at 9:30 p.m.
Shake it: Meanwhile over at Geno’s, the always popular Grupo Esperanza will be putting on a show. Show’s at 8 p.m., Booty shakin’ is on the agenda.
‘Nuff said.
Saturday
Speaking of booty shaking: So this little band called Miss Fairchild is rolling into town tonight to play at Space. Perhaps you’ve heard of them?
Though they operate out of Boston, this neo-funk band has enjoyed a strong following in Portland for the last several years. Think Sly and The Family Stone – that’s including the outfits and the afros.
They’re in town for the release of "Miss Fairchild Presents: The Miss Fairchild Mixtape," a collection of their original stuff plus covers from other bands such as The Time and yes, Tony, Toni, Toné.
Special guest at tonight’s show is soulstress Kristina Kentigian, formerly of Ill Natural.
It’s an 18 + show, with doors at 9 p.m.
And I still got something for your funky... Over at the White Heart tonight Wepushbuttons.com is hosting yet another party, which should be another solid blend of house, electronic and deep bass that we’ve come to expect from WPB.
Your servers include Jason Keith, Mosher and j.hort. Show starts at 9 p.m.
Sunday
That’s no moon, that’s BINGO! There is a dirty, dirty rumor that BINGO! Will take place at Geno’s tonight. You know the drill, trust no one, keep your knife hand ready and prepare for canned meat products.
Finally, here’s your moment of zen, courtesy YouTube and the MSNBC. Finally, a cable network anchor snaps…and why? Paris Hilton.
Hell, bring back Larry. They're almost the same age now.
BTW, Doctor J., I love your column. (You must be speaking from a position of unprecedented journalistic success and longevity to cast such aspersions upon Justin, right?) Keep up the great work, brothah!
You've had comments deleted before because of their racist nature, and if this was my blog I would consider deleting this one as well. Why exactly to feel the need to write such hateful things?
Justin is a journalist that gets to have a little fun with this blog. Not sure why you don't get that. Considering how much you claim to know about journalism it seems you would understand the difference between news articles, columns and blogs. Clearly you do not.
(Also worth noting, you should look up what ebonics is, since you are always accusing Justin of using it but he simply never has).
Perhaps you are the one who should go back to school.

Doctor J (a sarcastic lol for your name choice),
Don't you have a Skinheads in Maine meeting to get to?
Seriously, racist navel gazing is so last century.
And if you hate Mr. Ellis' blog so much, why do you keep reading it?
Would this be like me listening to Bill O'Reilly or something?
Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove
it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine
Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the
Monday Magazine.
If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture,"
covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college
debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music
scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa
Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.
Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of
Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer,
redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life
would sound like.
When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain
America.
Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and
what they do.
