The Weekend: Beer on a stick, block parties and Star Wars

How is it possible someone just recently thought of the idea of beer on a stick? Maybe this idea doesn’t seem so strange to me because I come from Minnesota, where we are notorious for putting anything and everything on a stick at the Minnesota State Fair.

You think I’m joking?

But frozen beer on a stick, that seems like an idea whose time has come. In a world of hard lemonades, wine coolers and other mysterious hybrid-booze, why not beer on a stick?

Think about it, how much more would you enjoy the Greek Festival if you could get down on some gyros and then follow it up with a Shipyard on a Stick?

Just something to think about going into the weekend.

FRIDAY

  • One big night: You should understand that while I don’t follow punk and hardcore music that much, I do know one thing: The Lowlife/Outbreak show at Geno’s tonight is huge. Maine hardcore could likely bring about the destruction of Geno’s tonight since this is the first time Lowlife has played together in years and Outbreak has been busy touring the U.S. Also playing at tonight’s show are Deathkiller and Downhill Fast. It’s $8 to get into to the 21 + show. Starts at 8 p.m.

  • ALL AGES ALERT: Over at Space Gallery tonight The Evens are playing an all-ages show starting at 8 p.m. The Evens are a two-person crew, which would still seem absurd until the White Stripes proved otherwise a few years ago. Ian MacKaye (formerly of Fugazi & Minor Threat) and Amy Farina (The Warmers) have released two full-length albums of stripped down, drum driven music that feels like harder roots rock. I give much respect to anyone that can make it work with drums and a bass guitar. To get a taste check out this fan site and let me know what you think. Show’s at 8 p.m., tickets are $5.

SATURDAY

  • Art it up a bit: The good people over at the Evolve2Advance collaborative are doing it again with the Radiance Arts & Culture Festival beginning at noon today in Lincoln Park.
The block party features games (I’m talking about FOURSQUARE people!) and music from some of Portland’s finest DJs and MCs, including Boondocks and Kenmore, as well as Lukaduke and Selecta Sleep up from Boston. There will be art for sale, plus a raffle of local work from Ratio, Worn Ink and Francisco deSena.
Money from the event will go to Momentum, the group trying to raise money for a new skatepark in Portland.

Who/what is Evolve2Advance? It’s a collaborative of artists that strives for expression and community involvement through the use of art, music and culture. You may remember the Evolution Soundsystem from this time last year, which brought together MCs DJs and others to celebrate the community and what makes Portland Portland.
Be sure to stop by Lincoln Park – next to the Central Fire Station, at the corner of Congress and Franklin Arterial. You can also catch the after-party, with much more from the afternoon's beat makers, at the Big Easy.

  • Rock Redux, or ALL AGES ALERT part deux: Here’s the line-up card at The Station tonight: Headstart!, The Killing Moon, Are You A Fox?, Alias Grace, the Project and Cerulean.

    ALL AGES. $10.

This is a benefit for the Rock ‘N Roll Summer Camp put on each year by the Portland Conservatory of Music. Each summer many rockers in training pass through the camp, including The Project, winners of this year’s Reindeer Rockoff.

    Doors at 7 p.m.

SUNDAY

  • Roll Bounce...and hit: Say there friends, can YOU rollerskate? Do YOU like the feeling of being a winner? Ever feel the need to get some of that aggression out in ways that don’t put your loved ones or co-workers at risk?
If you answered any of these questions and are a Lady, then you, yes YOU can be a member of the Maine Roller Derby!

The roller derby is holding a good old fashioned recruitment drive over at Happy Wheels in Portland today, starting at 5:30 p.m. What they are looking for is women over 21 who are interested in skating. They’ll have a scrimmage and some time for Q&A afterwards. PLUS, they’re also looking for referees as well as EMTs and other folks to help out, so just about anyone is encouraged to stop by.

Finally your moment of Zen, courtesy of Robot Chicken and Cartoon Network. If you don’t know about Robot Chicken, please familiarize yourself accordingly. Last week they produced a 30-minute "Star Wars" special that I have not been able to get out of my head – especially the Admiral Ackbar Ceral sketch. If you’re a fan of "Star Wars" on any level, you should check it out. The whole episode is available online. Here’s a taste:

Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the Monday Magazine.

If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture," covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.

Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer, redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life would sound like.

When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain America.

Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and what they do.
