Looking back, looking forward

Today’s gotta be quick, deliberate and dirty as I am still recovering from the Phoenix’s Best Music Poll awards last night, too many Appletinis with Shannon Moss and the guys from Dead Season.

Also I’m mourning the loss of Veronica Mars, which apparently is not good enough TV for the CW.

ANYWAY, there’s big multimedia/new media/internets news today: I’m doing my first online chat on Monday. At 12:30 p.m. Monday I’ll be online to answer…well, I don’t know whose questions.

They asked me for a few topics for the chat and here are my suggestions: local hip-hop, graffiti, proms and of course, Bacon. Obviously bacon is something near and dear to my heart, but the others are recent topics that have come up in the blog or column.

Want to mouth off about the talent in the local hip-hop scene? Monday. Want to give your take on graffiti and the new ordinance in South Portland? Monday. Have an amazing (or devastating) prom experience? Monday.

As Jim Rome would say: "Have a take and don’t suck."

ALSO: A few events tonight – Singer/Songwriter Catie Curtis is playing a benefit for Add Verb Productions at the State Street Church tonight. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $12 for students, $15 for the rest.

The Everyday Visuals are playing with Hiss and Chambers over at the Big Easy tonight at 9 p.m. While I do not know much about the indie group out of Boston, Dylan Martin does, so check it out.
Hiss and Chambers is a high-energy, danceable act that has more than a few '80s influences.
They’re on the verge of releasing an EP and tonight’s show would be a good chance to see if it’s something you’ll be purchasing.

Oh you are so screwed. I will be there Monday. I will blackmail you for money to stop me from telling the world about certain.... of which I have personal knowledge.

And yeah. Screw The CW. Veronica Mars rocked socks. Yet another piece of evidence proving the Head Theory of Television: If Head likes it, it's likely to be cancelled.
IE: Firefly, Wonderfalls, Veronica Mars, Angel. You're on notice How I Met Your Mother and Heroes.

Unfortunately, I didn't get to stay for Hiss and Chambers, because it was getting way too late for me. They sounded really good on their sound check, though. I'll definitely have to check them out sometime when I have more energy. The Everyday Visuals show review should be up soon.

Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the Monday Magazine.

If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture," covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.

Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer, redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life would sound like.

When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain America.

Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and what they do.
