Stay Classy, Rosie's
Would you believe we’ve got one of America’s best bars down on Fore Street?
Any guesses? It’s not Liquid Blue or Gritty McDuff’s.
It’s Rosie’s.
Yes – Rosie’s!
The June issue of Esquire features the magazine’s list of the Best Bars in America and Rosie’s made the cut.
It’s the latest installment of an annual look at something I think most of us enjoy at one point or another: our neighborhood bar.
Here’s a taste of what they had to say:
“The bartenders are seasoned and friendly, there’s never too much noise to talk over and you can usually get a table. And the popcorn is free.”
The June issue drops tomorrow – and you can also check out the full list at Esquire.com.
I could not agree more. What’s not to like about Rosie’s? The beer remains cheap, the popcorn is always fresh, you can get food late and they've got gravy fries that make women swoon. Plus everyone gets treated like a good friend.
I’ve had countless great times at Rosie’s over the years: I saw Doug Mientkiewicz make the final out for the Red Sox World Series win in 2004. In 2005 I had a beer with former Time magazine reporter Matt Cooper, who later gave testimony in the Scooter Libby CIA leak case.
And who knows how many times I’ve run into Rosie’s for late bite to eat – you gotta love a place where you can get a burger or a club sandwich after 10 p.m.
But this is not the first time Portland’s bar scene has received national attention.
Gritty’s recently got written up in Playboy as a College Bar of the Month, noting the tasty local brews and the usually packed weekend atmosphere.
In 2004 the Alehouse was recognized as one of the 20 Best Dive Bars in the country by Stuff Magazine. Sadly the fame could not save the bar from its demise last year.

Hooray for Rosie's!
I have to say, I haven't found anything nearly as good in Jersey City -- or even in Manhattan for that matter.
Rosie's, please ship some poutine my way. I need to introduce it to the local menu.

Damn that insufferable one "from away." Will she never stop littering the internet with words like "poutine?"
We'll always have the summer, Colleen. Always.

Justin, make sure you get all of these less-gentrifying honors to the folks in City Hall who take credit when we land on the cover of Pocketwatch & Monacle Monthly

HA! I knew a Rosie's mention on the front page of mt.com would get Colleen - now living away - to unlurk!
Guess I have to check out this place finally, before all them From Away do, didn't know they had POPcorn.

Anywhere that sells high life. Especially when priced under $2.00

I grew up in Portland though I'm in San Francisco for the time being. I used to pop into all the little dive bars and/or overcrowded noise factories in the Old Port but I confess I've never been to Rosie's. When I move back in a few months to start law school at UMaine I just might have to check this place out. Is there any good blues/jazz in Portland yet and by "good" I don't mean the Big Sleazy.

Never underestimate the Champagne of Beers. Never. They go great with Monte Cristos and turkey clubs - my sandwiches of choice!

Dakadakadakadakadaka...
Sometimes, when I'm on the run from Sanchez, I park my Stutz on the cobblestones and park my keyster at Rosie's for a bite and a slug or three. Lookin' fresh, Rosie. Missed ya. High lives all around.
Goulet!

HA! I pay the electric at Rosie's because I am there so often! One of the greatest places in the Old Port by far...forget the champagne of beers, when you can enjoy a PBR and best burger in town!
