Weekend Run Down: Web-Slinger's Edition
Holy freakin’ crap, there’s a lot going on this weekend! If I was an anchorman I might say something like, “Better super-size your weekend because there’s a lot going on around town! Let’s send it to Tom for the fast-cast!”
I think we can all be happy I’m not an anchorman.
What I am is pumped for Spider-Man 3 this weekend – I saw the first two at least three times each in the theater – so here’s the weekend mix, Spidey-Style:
Friday
- With great power comes great responsibility: Uh oh…take heed old people, I am going to mention graffiti. It’s all-day spray from local and national graffiti artists at Percy Cycles on Deering Avenue. As part of the First Friday Art Walk, Percy Cycles is hosting local artist Rich as well as writers and artists who will be producing works on plywood to be auctioned off to raise money for Portland’s legal graffiti wall. The day-long soundtrack will be provided by DJ Boondocks of Open Mic Night fame. The paint starts at 2 p.m.
- Marvel Team-Up: We are talking about some B-I-N-G-O, people. The sport, the legend, the pageantry of the slow calling out of numbers and letters for marginal – and sometimes disturbing – prizes. Tonight at the White Heart, there will be bingo with Portland’s favorite hosts The Fuge and Country Rhodes.
You may remember the comedy stylings of this duo – it may involve adult diapers, dead celebrities, and a love for Rod Roddy that only two men with a laptop and a hopper full of tiny plastic balls can know. They closed down the old Free Street and have resurfaced at Geno’s. Come for the comedy (the kind that you often find yourself saying, “Why did I laugh at that?”) but stay for the prizes…which could included potted meat. Fun time begins at 5 p.m. You were warned.
- Spins a web, any size: Speaking of Geno’s, tonight’s line up is all-hip-hop. K-the-i???, Shortrock, Brzowski, Onepersun, Mike Blast and DJ Graymatter are on the line-up card for tonight. K-the-i??? recently got some national love as part of URB Magazine’s Next 1,000. It’s a $5 show and begins around 10 p.m.
Saturday
- Friendly Neighborhood Wallcrawler: Today’s one of the sweetest days of the year…it’s Free Comic Book Day. For several years now, the comic book industry has tried to find ways to draw more people into comics as a way to boost the medium and encourage reading.
If you're a fan, make sure to grab a friend. If you're curious, grab a friend and head out. What’s possibly better than something free? Nothing. Locally, you can head over the Casablanca Comics and Newbury Comics. Check out the FCBD Web site to find which books are available – but wouldn’t you know it, a Spidey book is available. How convenient...
- Versus the Sinister Six: Peter Parker’s preferred mode of transportation may be the web shooters, but would you believe his second is... the scooter? If you’re an owner of Vespa or other short-rides, have some pride, and not just because a fictional character tools around on one that looks like yours. If you take to the streets today, beware the unruly mobs of scooter hooligans.
- El Asombroso Spider-Man: I’m a thankful and happy man that I am not on monitor duty at Press Herald Plaza this weekend. Not that anyone’s expecting hordes of Spider-Man fans will riot, but there’s a strange convergence of events, let’s just call it Derby de Mayo. If the Kentucky Derby is decadent and depraved...what happens when it's on Cinco de Mayo? Here’s a tip from someone who’s not Irish, has not celebrated Cinco de Mayo and is not a gambler – take it easy on the tequila and mint juleps.
Here’s a couple of shows to follow up tonight – that may or may not by holiday-related:
Geno’s Half-Way to Halloween Ball is tonight and will feature By Blood Alone, Covered in Bees along with DJ King Alberto and Vina’s Vicious Vixens. This is the second year for the mid-year costume party and this year’s theme is “Mars Attacks.” Maybe the space suit look is making a comeback – thanks crazy astronaut love triangle. There is nothing like a costume party to cut loose – no better time then when you’re almost in disguise. If you show up with something creative you can enter in the costume contest.
It’s 21 +, tickets are $8 and the show starts at 9 p.m.
Over at Bubba’s Grupo Esperanza will be serving up their well-known brand of Latin funk. Portland’s Afro-Cuban all-start squad will be playing with the Troglodytes beginning at 9 p.m at the sulky lounge. Another 21 + show and tickets are $10.
