Bright lights, fancy dresses and exploding beverages

Couple of quick hits today, gotta take the blog down a few gears in anticipation of what looks to be a huge weekend.

There’s a lot to love about shopping at second-hand stores like Goodwill and Salvation Army, like old records (I have picked up Cory Hart, Neil Diamond and Dokken records at Goodwill, all typically for a dollar… But that’s a story for another time), random home goods (I also picked up an old typewriter…again, a story for a different time) and clothes.

But the unique and sometimes dated couture is not always for Halloween or theme parties. The fashion marketing program at PATHS is throwing its annual spring student fashion show, and this year’s theme is “Runway Remix.”

Taking prom styles from the past, the students will offer their take on fashions dating back decades. The best part is students have put together the outfits for $15 or less from Goodwill.

The show begins at 7:30 tonight at the Portland High School gym. It’s $5 to get in, and a silent auction will feature items from Jill McGowen, Angela Adams and Maralyce Ferree.

This completes your NXT Fashion Minute.

Here’s a good question – if you’ve become famous for spraying beverages all over the place, what do you do when you’ve got something to celebrate? Do you keep champagne bottled, or carefully pour it?

Maine’s got itself another award winner now that the Diet Coke-soaked guys from Eepy Bird won two Webbys. The awards were announced on Monday and they received Best Viral Video and People’s Voice Award for Best Viral Video. See kids, messing with your food can get you far. Diet Coke and Mentos are taking this pair to the awards celebration next month in June.

Also, the Ninja of “Ask A Ninja” took best actor in the special achievement category. How much would you pay to see that acceptance speech?

It’s not exactly the fountain at the Bellagio…but then again, what is.

Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the Monday Magazine.

If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture," covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.

Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer, redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life would sound like.

When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain America.

Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and what they do.
