Rain, beats, bikes and living life

I gotta say, I’m surprised by you people. I offered up a whole blog-ful o’ sex yesterday, and not one single comment?

What is this world coming to when a man tries to get some provocative discussion going and no one says a word? Teenagers! Sex! Blog!

Moving on…a mystery before we get to the weekend. Being the observant reporter that I am, I could not help but notice yesterday that there were no books, coffee or magazines in Casco Bay Books. In fact, there was a whole lot of nothing, except for a sign on the door that said Casco Bay Books is closed.

Wha??? Now, where am I going to buy Waxpoetics or Giant Robot? Anyone know what went down?

  • This rainy Friday marks the annual Take Back the Night rally, which was supposed to take place in Monument Square. Word went out late yesterday that the rain location would be First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church. The annual event has been a way to speak out against sexual assault.

The rally will feature performances from Bully Club, Sontiago, Vanessa Torres & Touching Ground and the girls from Say It Loud.

There’ll also be speakers such as Maine Senate President Beth Edmunds and Stephan Morin, the student program coordinator for the University of Southern Maine Center of Sexuality and Gender Diversity.

  • Tonight there’s more than a few options – Over at Geno’s you’ll find the Big Coffin Hunters with Kalvin Koolidge and The Humanoids. It’s a $5 show, and BCH is straight, heavy guitar rocks that’s just plan hard and nasty. Starts at 9 p.m.
  • Meanwhile, over at the White Heart you’ll find The Soul Proprietor, who you may know for his affinity for the type of '70s deep soul tracks that make you inexplicably bob your head. You may also know him for his work off the turntables at The Bollard. Show starts at 9 p.m.

SATURDAY

  • “And just when you think they just can’t stop rockin’, they just rock some more!” Tonight’s the night many of you have (hopefully) been waiting for, yes, I’m talking about the screening of “Air Guitar Nation” and the accompanying air guitar rock-off at Space. No, I don’t think you understand, all those times you nearly broke your wrist riffing to Van Halen’s “Beautiful Girls” or Foreigner’s “Feels Like the First Time” were in preparation for this.

Tickets are $6 in advance, $8 at the door and the film begins at 8 p.m. with the competition right afterward. Buy the ticket, take the ride, live the spandex-pant dream.

  • Tonight's Mike Cloud's big night. Cloud's newest album "Broken Speaker Project" is finally ready to drop and Milled Pavement is throwing a CD release party upstairs at Amigo's. Not only does the album feature a parade of guest stars, but the CD release party will feature cameos from Bread, Syn the Shaman, Drey Senior and Moshe. It's a $3 cover and things kicks off at 9 p.m.

SUNDAY

  • If the rain breaks today and if you happen to like biking, head over to USM's Sullivan Gym for the Great Maine Bike Swap put on by the Bicycle Coalition of Maine and the USM chapter of PIRG.

Think one part garage sale, one part swap meet and another part coffee talk. Bikes will be for sale, and there will be experts, enthusiasts and other gearheads to talk about how to get the most out of your ride.

The swap runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is only $2 to get in. If it's a nice enough day you might be able to head out for a ride around Back Cove afterwards.

Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the Monday Magazine.

If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture," covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.

Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer, redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life would sound like.

When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain America.

Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and what they do.
