Midweek round-up
Gotta make a few quick hits today, busy getting together next week’s column.
It’s spring, and that means, well, several things. But on top of the list next to graduation is the job search.
This can possibly be more frightening than graduation, because you have to prove some worth by selling yourself.
I think I went to at least five different job fairs during my senior year of college, none of which did anything but get my hopes up and lead to more anxiety.
Encouraging, yes?
But the job fairs, by sheer numbers, have to work out for someone, right? There are two local job fairs over the next two weeks. The University of Southern Maine is holding a fair at noon tomorrow at Sullivan Gym on the Portland campus. Some of the possibilities include jobs with Avon, Frito Lay, Inc., and WGME-TV 13! Cosmetics, chips and a chance to live out the anchorman dream.
The second job fair is at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 23 at the Sheraton Hotel in South Portland. That one’s sponsored by Mainejobs.com, one of this company's partners, and will feature folks from Time Warner Cable, Maine Medical Center, and apparently the Press Herald/Telegram.
Find your good tie, get a fresh pair of panty hose and for God’s sake have someone else proof read your resume.
I’m looking to write a column about the job search later this month, so if by some chance you’d like to talk about your long and tortured ride to employment, e-mail me.
- I know a lot of you are probably Meiklejohned-out at this point, but I noticed a reoccurring theme (among many) in the comments over the past two days. Some have raised the question about whether younger, child-less people who may or may not spend a night out in the Old Port from time to time have any business being on the school board. Thoughts?
- Finally, the bacon-link of the day, courtesy of the people at the New York Times.
“In the experiment, some of the tasters sampled between four and six bacon sandwiches a day for three or four days.”
