The man who made Kool-Aid say, 'Oh yeah'

Talib Kweli is coming to Portland.
It was just announced that Kweli will be doing an all-ages show with DJ Jon at the Station on Saturday, April 21.
Read that to yourself again.

Talib Kweli. All ages. Portland.
Look for ticket giveaways on WRED 95.9 and at open mic night at the Big Easy on Monday the 16th. A local opening act is also in the works.
EYE9D lined up the show, tickets are $20, $25 at the door, and will be available at Bull Moose Music, Strawberries and online through EYE9D.

Some may describe Kweli as an “underground” rapper or “conscious” rapper. I’m not entirely sure what that means, but he’s put out some hot albums over the last nine years. Of course, that’s been measured with varying degrees of popularity and what record companies could call "mild commercial success."
He started it off with 1998’s "Black Star," the collaboration with Mos Def, and Reflection Eternal with Hi-Tek in 2000.
More recently you may have heard him on "Liberation," which was released last year with Madlib, or on "Dave Chappelle’s Block Party."

As some of you may already know, that’s gonna be a real thick week for hip hop in Portland. Labseven and Mr. Lif of the Perceptionists are playing the Station on April 19, Kool Keith (aka Dr. Octagon) of Ultramagnetic is at the Space on April 20, and Kid Koala is also at the Space on April 21.
If you’re anything like me, it’s gonna be an agonizing choice either way on April 21.

Either that or there’s gonna be a lot of hustling between the Space and the Station. Look for more next week.

Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the Monday Magazine.

If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture," covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.

Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer, redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life would sound like.

When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain America.

Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and what they do.
