Who’s avenging the what now?
I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that part of what got me after today's column was the name of the group. "The Vestigial Avengers" has a classy-yet-two-fisted-justice kind of sound to it.
The thing is, the name just barely made it into the column.
Just before deadline Friday I was able to find out where the name came from. If that didn't happen, then they would most likely been called "group of students at MECA."
As Lisa Pixley mentions, the name was her idea after the word kept being used to describe people’s work. Still, she said she had to look it up. So did I:
According to Webster’s, the root word is Vestige:
"A trace, mark or sign of something that once existed but has passed away or disappeared."
Sadly, the Urban Dictionary does not offer up too many alternative meanings.
Pixley said she mashed it up with avengers, put it out in an e-mail and surprisingly, no one objected.
If you think about it there’s plenty of ways to look at what, in this case, disappeared. Is it the art of speechifyin’ and public speaking, or is it the topics they’re discussing, things like history, scavenging and creating art, or just conversation.
As for Avengers , I think we all know where that comes from. You should know it took everything I had not to make an “Avengers Assemble” joke. As we all know I am not above cheap gags, but that would have been too easy.
Make sure to check out the Vestigial Avengers final forum this Friday.
