So close to quittin' time

And we're back, coming to you live from Press Herald Plaza. Though snow (and blackouts) threatened to bury this weekend, the adventures to be had are many.

The Blunt Youth Radio crew is trying to get to New York City this spring, and they need the cash to do it. How? Hair.

Head over to Casco Bay Books on Middle Street in Portland between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. today and tomorrow to get your hair braided - girls and guys. If you got a few dollars in your pocket, they'll take any donations.

Most of you know it's also First Friday in Portland, which means Art Walk, which also means good luck finding a place to park. Local artist Matt Moore, aka MWM, is holding a farewell show at 6 p.m. at Sanctuary Tattoo and Art Gallery on Forest Avenue. MWM's art is a synthesis of graffiti, letterforms and illustration. You may have seen Bangers 3 , his most recent book of black and white work, or Wallspankers , a “sticker-zine” collaboration with other artists. MWM went and got himself a job as a designer for Burton Snow Boards and will be moving to Vermont.

Finally, it’s the weekend, and there's a couple of much loved favorites at Bubba’s Sulky Lounge. Tonight DJ Jon’s spinning '80s music – as always it’s $5 to get in, but free in '80s gear. Get out your parachute pants and be prepared to find out if you know the words to a lot more '80s songs then you thought. On Saturday, it’s Grupo Esperanza. They got horns, they got drums, and they get people moving. The band with the Afro-Cuban sound always seems to please, and it’s only $6 to get in.

Monday’s column day, see you back here.

Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the Monday Magazine.

If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture," covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.

Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer, redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life would sound like.

When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain America.

Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and what they do.
