I'm your friend, I'm not like the others

Hello friends, welcome to the tea party.

I've been writing the "youth" column for over 3 years and someone thought, "Hey! Let's do it on the Internets!" Add some fancy graphics, a sense of ego, a glamour shot and you have what you read before you.

When people ask what my Monday column's about I usually hesitate, try not to use the words "stuff" or "junk" and end up saying, "uh, youth...culture."

If things seem vague, there's a reason. To prove my point take a look at my proposed list of blog titles:

NXT: The Next Generation - One more jerk with a blog
NXT: The Next Generation - Thoughts on stuff that matters
NXT: The Next Generation - How to succeed in blogging without really trying
NXT: The Next Generation - Because someone had to do it
NXT: The Next Generation - Keeping one step ahead of the man
NXT: The Next Generation - Where it's ok to laugh
NXT: The Next Generation - A rope of sand
NXT: The Next Generation - There's a line for the bathroom
NXT: The Next Generation - Like PerezHilton.com without the "unintentional" nudity
NXT: The Next Generation - All the meat, none of the fat

Let's be honest, your time is important and what I'll try to do here is the same thing I try to do in the paper - give you something you may not see somewhere else. At the same time, if there's one thing I hear constantly, it's that people under 35 rarely get into the paper unless it's in the police blotter, the sports section or the music listings. That leaves a lot of ground to cover.

I will make this promise to you; I will never use the word "blogosphere." That said, I am hopeful for our future together. Please, please, please feel free to send along links, videos and column ideas.

Be back later with places to hit this weekend.

Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the Monday Magazine.

If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture," covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.

Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer, redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life would sound like.

When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain America.

Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and what they do.
