2004 Bruce Roberts Toy Fund

What
The Press Herald/Telegram Bruce Roberts Toy Fund is a non-profit organization that solicits funds, primarily through the Portland Press Herald and Maine Sunday Telegram, to purchase toys for distribution to children in need in York, Cumberland, Lincoln, Sagadahoc and Knox Counties. Parents and legal guardians of children 18 and under may apply. The Fund serves children of all faiths and ethnic backgrounds. An all-volunteer board of directors oversees the fund.


When
Applications for toys are available beginning mid-October at: The Welcome Center, Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram, 390 Congress Street; Salvation Army offices throughout the five-county area; the United Way; and many other local service organizations. Applications are also available within the Press Herald/Telegram in early November. They are accepted from parents and legal guardians only. Toys are picked up, beginning in November, at the Bruce Roberts´ warehouse, located on the corner of Cumberland and Myrtle Streets in Portland (pickup is in the rear of the newspapers´ former press building--the front of the building is located at 385 Congress St. across from the Press Herald/Telegram).

History
Formerly of the Evening Express, the Press Herald/Telegram´s Bruce Roberts Toy Fund has been providing toys for children in need since 1949. Donations are listed daily in the newspaper between mid-November and January.
