Kobe and the County

You might be familiar with the story of Sean Daniels of Easton (up in the County), who lost his right hand in a farming accident last fall but returned to play basketball at Easton High.

Daniels attended the Kobe Bryant Basketball Camp in California, where he met the Lakers star earlier this week. Daniels' story was featured on The Early Show on CBS.

March Madness part 2

Falmouth graduate Bryant Barr got only three minutes of playing time but No. 10 Davidson upset No. 7 Gonzaga 82-76 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Omaha, Neb.

Maine's March Madness connections

With the release of the NCAA men's and women's basketball tournament brackets, several Mainers will be on national television when the "madness" begins Thursday.

Bryant Barr (Falmouth) and No. 10 Davidson face No. 7 Gonzaga in a first-round men's tournament game Friday in Raleigh, N.C., while Ashley Cimino (McAuley) and No. 2 Stanford face No. 15 Cleveland State in a first-round women's tournament game Thursday in Palo Alto, Calif.

Joanne Palombo McCallie and No. 3 Duke face No. 14 Murray State on Sunday in College Park, Md., in a first-round women's tournament game. McCallie (better known as "Coach P") played at Brunswick and coached at the University of Maine, and she's pretty familiar with this tournament thing – three years ago, McCallie's Michigan State team played for the national championship.

Rachel is in her fourth year as a sports reporter at the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram. A Maryland native and a former college soccer and softball player, she covered high school and college sports at newspapers in Pennsylvania, Texas and Colorado before joining the Press Herald/Sunday Telegram staff in June of 2004.

She grew up watching the NHL, the Pittsburgh Steelers, Georgetown basketball and the Baltimore Orioles and is a confessed sports nut. Her interests include reading and movies, going to the gym, Motown and '70s R&B music and following the New York City tabloids.

Married in July, she and her husband Tommy are avid Steelers and Kansas Jayhawks fans. Their toughest decision as newlyweds has been "NESN or ESPN?"
