Temporary digs

The Falmouth hockey locker room at Family Ice Center has new tenants this week – the U.S. national hockey team, which opened up training camp this afternoon at Family Ice. It was pretty strange to see Boston's Phil Kessel and not Derek Kump walking in and out of the locker room.

Several area high school hockey coaches and players, including Falmouth forward Mike Chase (taking copious notes) were also on hand to watch the first Team USA skate, which was open to the public.

Team USA practices at 11 a.m. Friday and at 12:40 Saturday in Falmouth. Team Sweden also practices at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Falmouth.

Keeping up with ...

... Vanderbilt shortstop Ryan Flaherty is as easy as navigating the Internet.

The former Deering standout is keeping an online journal on Vanderbilt's athletics Web site and updates it every 10 days or so.

Once spring sports get on a roll, I hope to be updating this blog a little more frequently, too.

Ice time

Brunswick sophomore Ashley Salerno helped Assabet Valley (Mass.) win the U-16 USA Hockey national championship this weekend in West Chester, Pa., while Saco's Katherine Pate and Greene's Kara Violette helped Assabet Valley win the girls U-12 championship.

Pate and Violette went against a legacy - leading Team Pittsburgh was Stephanie Lemieux, the daughter of NHL Hall of Famer Mario Lemieux. After the younger Lemieux tied the game with 51 seconds left in regulation, Violette's goal in the eighth overtime gave Assabet Valley a 2-1 win.

Like father, like daughter. Witness the younger Lemieux, albeit a bit grainy, falling down on the ice to score a goal earlier this season - via YouTube and TSN (Canada's answer to ESPN).

Catching up with ...

Just a few thoughts after returning to the office following an extended weekend ...

We caught up with Logan Crane on Monday - which, if you're a sprinter, might be pretty hard to do considering Crane's speed. Crane, who spearheaded the track program at Freeport, has taken on a unique training routine at Tufts, one that's common for NCAA women's basketball teams – practicing against male athletes.

It's a method that, while common, that has come under scrutiny and could be up for debate at this year's NCAA Convention.

Rachel is in her fourth year as a sports reporter at the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram. A Maryland native and a former college soccer and softball player, she covered high school and college sports at newspapers in Pennsylvania, Texas and Colorado before joining the Press Herald/Sunday Telegram staff in June of 2004.

She grew up watching the NHL, the Pittsburgh Steelers, Georgetown basketball and the Baltimore Orioles and is a confessed sports nut. Her interests include reading and movies, going to the gym, Motown and '70s R&B music and following the New York City tabloids.

Married in July, she and her husband Tommy are avid Steelers and Kansas Jayhawks fans. Their toughest decision as newlyweds has been "NESN or ESPN?"
