For the past four years it seems as if Messalonskee's Jesse Labreck has dominated Class A track, amassing all of the Eagles points by herself at state championship meets.
But all those times you thought Labreck's feats were pretty amazing, a high schooler in Texas singlehandedly won the Class 1A title this weekend in Austin. Bonnie Richardson earned 42 points in the 100, 200, high jump, long jump and discus to win the state team title for Rochelle High School, about 140 miles northwest of Austin.

Here's some light reading from the New York Times about female athletes and ACL injuries.
The story, adapted from “Warrior Girls: Protecting Our Daughters Against the Injury Epidemic in Women’s Sports,” by Michael Sokolove, in part examines the lengths that female athletes (particularly high school athletes) go to in order to rehabilitate and return to the playing field after the injury and surgery.

If you've read about John Challis in the past week, the Freedom, Pa., high schooler got the royal treatment Sunday in Pittsburgh.
Challis, who has terminal cancer, attended the Flyers-Penguins playoff game and spent part of the game in the luxury box of owner and Hockey Hall of Famer Mario Lemieux. Oh, and Challis had some company - Atlanta Braves pitcher John Smoltz and Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.
(On that note, I'll insert a shameless plug - Go Penguins!)
