A look at other states

Consider this. We've been pretty lucky to have warm weather over the past few days, but as Maine is getting into full stride in its spring sports season, the warmer-weather states are closing their seasons. Cases in point – Florida held its state track championships last weekend, while Texas holds its outdoor track championships this weekend.

Which leads me to a point.

According to Dyestat.com, Zakeya Stinson of Miami, Fla., currently has the nation's top mark of 49 feet, 7.5 inches in the girls shot put for the 2008 outdoor track season.

Greely's Becky O'Brien finished with the nation's second best indoor mark (51-5) in the shot put and won the event last week (47-11) in a four-team outdoor meet at Wells. She still has nearly a month for improvement – the state track championships are scheduled for June 7.

From the "He's certainly got his long-term future mapped out" department:

An eighth grader in California has given a verbal commitment to play basketball at the University of Kentucky.

Of course, his father's next priority is to find his 6-foot-4 son (who, I'm sure, is still growing) a proper high school.

Rachel is in her fourth year as a sports reporter at the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram. A Maryland native and a former college soccer and softball player, she covered high school and college sports at newspapers in Pennsylvania, Texas and Colorado before joining the Press Herald/Sunday Telegram staff in June of 2004.

She grew up watching the NHL, the Pittsburgh Steelers, Georgetown basketball and the Baltimore Orioles and is a confessed sports nut. Her interests include reading and movies, going to the gym, Motown and '70s R&B music and following the New York City tabloids.

Married in July, she and her husband Tommy are avid Steelers and Kansas Jayhawks fans. Their toughest decision as newlyweds has been "NESN or ESPN?"
