Minding the net

Greely forward Jesse Shavel gave props to freshman goalie Matt Labbe, who stopped 15 shots Tuesday in a 2-1 win over York in a Western Class B game at the Biddeford Ice Arena.

"He really kept us in it and for a freshman, that's huge," said Shavel, who scored both goals for Greely. "He's definitely picking it up and getting more confidence."

If you read today's story about Stanford women's basketball player and former McAuley standout Ashley Cimino, you learned a bit about microdisc surgery. Cimino underwent the surgery in November to alleviate back and leg pain after she suffered a herniated disc.

Dr. Joseph Maroon, the head of neurosurgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, has a section of his Web page dedicated to microdisc surgery, in case you're curious about the procedure.

Rachel is in her fourth year as a sports reporter at the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram. A Maryland native and a former college soccer and softball player, she covered high school and college sports at newspapers in Pennsylvania, Texas and Colorado before joining the Press Herald/Sunday Telegram staff in June of 2004.

She grew up watching the NHL, the Pittsburgh Steelers, Georgetown basketball and the Baltimore Orioles and is a confessed sports nut. Her interests include reading and movies, going to the gym, Motown and '70s R&B music and following the New York City tabloids.

Married in July, she and her husband Tommy are avid Steelers and Kansas Jayhawks fans. Their toughest decision as newlyweds has been "NESN or ESPN?"
