Fitzpatrick finalists

There you have it, the three finalists for the James J. Fitzpatrick Trophy – Gorham running back Justin Villacci, Gardiner quarterback/defensive back Kyle Stilphen and Lawrence quarterback Jack Hersom.

Villacci is Gorham's first finalist for the award, while Hersom is Lawrence's second finalist in as many years, joining Aaron Champagne, who was a finalist last year. Lawrence's only Fitzpatrick Trophy winner is Kirk Mathieu (1987). Gardiner's only Fitzpatrick winner was Nate Sergent (1997).

While they're preparing for the Jan. 20 banquet in Portland, winter sports will keep the current Fitzy finalists occupied.

Hersom plays ice hockey at Lawrence and on Friday joined the junior varsity team as a volunteer coach for a day. Villacci will defend the Class A title in the 55-meter dash and Stilphen plays basketball at Gardiner.

Rachel is in her fourth year as a sports reporter at the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram. A Maryland native and a former college soccer and softball player, she covered high school and college sports at newspapers in Pennsylvania, Texas and Colorado before joining the Press Herald/Sunday Telegram staff in June of 2004.

She grew up watching the NHL, the Pittsburgh Steelers, Georgetown basketball and the Baltimore Orioles and is a confessed sports nut. Her interests include reading and movies, going to the gym, Motown and '70s R&B music and following the New York City tabloids.

Married in July, she and her husband Tommy are avid Steelers and Kansas Jayhawks fans. Their toughest decision as newlyweds has been "NESN or ESPN?"
