Two of the area's biggest tournaments kick off after Christmas in the Portland area - the Maine Mall Holiday Basketball Classic and the the Maine High School Hockey Invitational.

The Maine Mall Basketball Classic will include 15 boys teams from Class A and Class B, as well as Susan Wagner of Staten Island, N.Y. Deering is the defending tournament champion - the Rams defeated Cheverus 59-44 for the 2006 title.

The Maine High School Hockey Invitational will include 44 teams from New England, New Jersey, New York, Nova Scotia, Ontario, New Brunswick and Quebec. The round-robin tournament kicks off Wednesday with games at the Portland Ice Arena, Biddeford Ice Arena, Travis Roy Arena in Yarmouth and Family Ice Center in Falmouth.

New England Hockey Journal recently profiled Deering senior Nick Broadwater, who has become one of the top goalies in junior hockey. (Broadwater played hockey at Deering during his freshman year. He's a pretty sharp lacrosse player, too.)

Rachel is in her fourth year as a sports reporter at the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram. A Maryland native and a former college soccer and softball player, she covered high school and college sports at newspapers in Pennsylvania, Texas and Colorado before joining the Press Herald/Sunday Telegram staff in June of 2004.

She grew up watching the NHL, the Pittsburgh Steelers, Georgetown basketball and the Baltimore Orioles and is a confessed sports nut. Her interests include reading and movies, going to the gym, Motown and '70s R&B music and following the New York City tabloids.

Married in July, she and her husband Tommy are avid Steelers and Kansas Jayhawks fans. Their toughest decision as newlyweds has been "NESN or ESPN?"
