Bowdoin Relays

Saturday at the Bowdoin Relays in Brunswick, four area track athletes had qualifying marks for one of two national meets in March – the Nike Indoor National meet in Landover, Md., and the National Scholastic Indoor Classic in New York.

Peter Slovenski, Brunswick: 15-2, boys pole vault
Becky O'Brien, Greely: 47-3, girls shot put
Dan Smith, Thornton Academy: 55-6, boys shot put
Brigham Michaud, Cheverus: 51-7, boys shot put

O'Brien's mark set a Maine record, according to Thornton Academy coach George Mendros, who compiles a list of the state's top regular-season and championship-meet track records. O'Brien set the previous record of 46-3 at the 2007 Class B championship.

Greely won the 15-team girls meet with 72 points, while Brunswick and Greely shared the boys title with 67 points.

Is there any chance that indoor track and field could get a little more coverage in the PPH? The Bowdoin Relays were certainly a bigger event than a single basketball game, but didn't get any mention in the newspaper. Seems odd.

Thanks!
