Wednesday marked the first day of the early signing period for the National Letter of Intent, which runs through Nov. 21. It's the first window for high school seniors to make a formal commitment to play sports at one college or university.

At its essence, the National Letter of Intent is a legally binding agreement that states that a student will agree to attend a college or university for one year and the institution agrees to provide financial aid for that year.
