Hurricanes? Puppies? You'll find it in Western Class B.
You'll hear the H-word mentioned around Cape Elizabeth and it's football team quite a bit this season, but it's not so much about the weather. The Capers defensive corps calls itself a "Hurricane." Capers quarterback Jim Bump explained on behalf of his teammates after Friday's 39-0 win over York.
"The Hurricane is the nickname our coach gave to our defense," Bump said. "It embraces our relentlessness. We fly around, we're nasty, hard-hitting, relentlessness, and never giving up."
York Coach Randy Small isn't about to let that loss to Cape get him down this early in the season. The 11th-year coach had a few choice words about his team.
"We're young pups, and now we've got to go home and drink our milk and hope we get better, " Small said. "But I love this team, I really do. This is one of my favorite teams that I've had. I've said it before, we're going 100 miles an hour but we just don't have a clue where we're going yet."
Of quotes and notes from Western C ...
Jay's Nick Bourassa, after a 47-0 win over Yarmouth, a first-year program:
“Programs take a long time to build up. It’s going to take a long time for them to build up. Our school’s been playing football for over 100 years. In three years, we could come here and they could take down the tradition we have. But I know their fans were pumped up about having football starting, and we welcomed them into the conference.”
