Trophy collecting

Hockey East announced its year end awards on Thursday in Boston.

Former Maine goalie Ben Bishop was named to the Hockey East Second Team.
Senior defenseman Bret Tyler was named as an honorable mention.

Bishop's year-end stats were not fantastic: 13-18-3, with a 2.43 goals-against and .920 save percentage. But he was the difference in many games down the stretch as Maine finished the season two points shy of of a berth in the league tourney.

Next top model?

Former Maine football player Daren Stone - the same guy who can leap cars with a single bound - has showed up on the fashion runway this winter modeling in a Sean Combs show.

Sean Combs as in P Diddy, Puff Daddy, Diddy, Puffy, the D to the I to the....you get it, the rap singer behind the clothing line Sean John.

Starved for hockey?

I'm guessing this last weekend was bit tough to stomach for some of you die hard Maine hockey fans.

Top seed UNH swept No. 8 UMass and will face No. 4 Boston College in the Hockey East semi-finals next Friday. No. 2 Boston University will take on No. 3 Vermont in the late game on Friday.

And Maine...well, Maine players are going to class and maybe hitting the links? A few have started their pro careers.

Bishop gone

Maine goalie Ben Bishop signed with the St. Louis Blues and will report to the team's AHL affiliate Peoria Rivermen for the remainder of the season.

Bishop, a junior, went 13-18-3 at Maine this season with a 2.43 goals-against average and a .920 save percentage.

His career record at Maine was 55-34-7 with a 2.29 goals-against.

It's all over for Maine hockey

Maine beat UMass-Lowell with a dramatic 2-1 overtime win Saturday, completing a fifth win in six games.

It was, however, the last game of the 2007-08 season for Maine.

UMass beat Merrimack 4-2 for the final Hockey East playoff spot, mathematically eliminating Maine on the final night of the regular season.

One last chance

Maine hockey stayed alive with a 4-1 win over UMass-Lowell on Friday night.

Only one scenario remains that gets Maine into the Hockey East playoffs now.

Maine needs to beat UMass-Lowell again on Saturday night and No. 10 Merrimack needs to beat No. 8 UMass. It's that simple.

Maine got goals Friday from Bret Tyler, Jeff Marshall, Tyler again, and an empty netter from Rob Bellamy.

This is it

Maine hockey is in unfamiliar territory this weekend, needing at least three points, and a little help from Merrimack in order to qualify for the Hockey East playoffs.

The No. 9 Black Bears have 17 points, two behind No. 8 Massachusetts, and two more than No. 10 Merrimack.

Basically Maine needs at least three points - a win and tie against UMass-Lowell - and needs UMass to stumble against Merrimack.

Maine can't get too much help from Merrimack though....because a three-way tie would go to them.

Staying alive

Maine shut out Vermont 3-0 Saturday night to stay alive in the hunt for the No. 8 Hockey East playoff spot.

Maine got 30 saves by goalie Ben Bishop and one goal per period from Wes Clark, Billy Ryan and Chris Hahn.

Maine needs to find a way to oust No. 8 Massachusetts in its final two games against UMass-Lowell next weekend.
