Belcher and six more pick up CAA honors

Maine's defensive end who's been called a "game wrecker" was named the Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Year on Monday.

Jovan Belcher led the CAA in tackles for loss with 15.5, and ranked second in sacks with 7.5.

He is just the second Black Bear in program history to earn the prestigious distinction. Former standout Stephen Cooper, a starting linebacker for the San Diego Chargers, won the award in 2001 and 2002.

Six other players were also honored by the league.

First-Team honors went to Belcher, center Ryan Canary and redshirt freshman Jared Turcotte.

Turcotte has rushed for a team high 602 yards and seven touchdowns.

Second-Team honors went to senior linebacker Andrew Downey.

Third-Team honors went to tailback Jhamal Fluellen, O-lineman Chris Arnao and cornerback Lionel Nixon Jr. - all seniors.

Check out the CAA website for an entire list of postseason honors.

Maine (8-4, 5-3 CAA) earned an at-large bid to the NCAA FCS playoffs and will face No. 3 seed Northern Iowa (10-2) on Saturday in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
