Thinking pink
The University of Maine volleyball team will be decked out in pink uniforms tonight in a 5 p.m. game against UNH as part of a national breast cancer awareness campaign called Dig Pink.
Senior setter Jessica Wolfenden was inspired to help organize the event by her mother Susan who is battling breast cancer. Her mother just finished chemo and radiation therapy back home in Ottawa, Ontario.
"When something like this touches your life you want to be a part of it and make the biggest contribution that you can," said Wolfenden. "My mom thinks it was a great idea and definitely wished she could've been here to see it tonight."
The team raised $450 at Maine's football game last week and another $830 online. The gym wall will be papered with pink volleyball cutouts representing contributors.
All month long high school and college volleyball teams around the country will be hosting similar games.
Fans are also encouraged to wear pink.
Donations can be made at the Dig Pink website.
