Battle for the Butter

So while most college football fans will be tuned into USC-Ohio State Saturday night for what has been dubbed the "Collision at the Coliseum" there is another little game with its own catchy title being played in Maine.

"The Battle for the Butter"

What, you say?

Well the hosts on ESPN Radio's "Mike and Mike in the Morning" were having a little fun on Thursday and picked a game at random off the college football schedule then asked viewers/listeners to name it.

The game: Stony Brook at Maine. Alfond Stadium. Orono. 6 p.m.

Apparently the Mikes got thousands of suggestions from fans and the winning name was picked: "The Battle for the Butter" - as in the butter one would dip lobster meat into before feasting on the flesh of the crustacean.

The winning coach will be interviewed on Mike & Mike Monday morning. The show has already arranged to get game footage from Bangor's WABI-TV5 to show along with the interview.

Maine's athletic marketing department has made up about 100 T-shirts emblazoned with "The Battle for the Butter" and will be giving them out to fans on game day.

Want to hear about it? Halfway through this morning's segment the Mike's get to the Battle for the Butter hoopla.

Spencer, I am a graduate student here at UMaine. Contact me at my email address and I will see if I can't scrounge up one of those Battle for the Butter T-Shirts. I was at the game today (just for the first quarter) and I must admit I didn't see to many of them kicking about, but you never know...maybe a student in one of my classes might have picked one up.

Someone should give Cosgrove some lesson in dealing with the media. He came off as a total bafoon in his 5 minutes of fame on Mike and Mike. I have been calling for his removal for years and this just seals it. Who starts off by correcting someone and mentioning he is also the losingest coach in Maine history. Give me a break. Find someone else to be the coach someone who knows how to win.
