Curtain call for Curt Smith

Curt Smith wrapped up his career at the University of Maine Wednesday night by being named the America East Player of the Year.

Smith had a monster year at the plate leading America East in four categories:

  • .403 batting average
  • .722 slugging percentage
  • 60 runs scored
  • 127 total bases

He finished second in on-base percentage (.498), tied for second in hits (71) and home runs (11), finished third in walks (32) and tied for fifth in doubles (17).

Two weeks ago infielder Ashley Waters earned the same honor for the Maine softball team. Neither team - baseball or softball - qualified for the playoffs.

In case you missed these UMaine stories from the last week:

May 18: Looking at lead in artificial turf

May 17: Tracking down what's best for horses

May 14: Thankfully, the track team saves some dignity at UMaine

No story yet on the termination of softball coach Stacy Sullivan? It was reported on WABI-TV in Bangor a few days ago. Don't worry JENN.....I'll keep you "in the loop" ;)
