Trophy collecting

Hockey East announced its year end awards on Thursday in Boston.

Former Maine goalie Ben Bishop was named to the Hockey East Second Team.
Senior defenseman Bret Tyler was named as an honorable mention.

Bishop's year-end stats were not fantastic: 13-18-3, with a 2.43 goals-against and .920 save percentage. But he was the difference in many games down the stretch as Maine finished the season two points shy of of a berth in the league tourney.

Tyler played in all 34 games for Maine and finished second in team scoring with eight goals and 12 assists.

Bishop is currently trying to help the Peoria Rivermen into the AHL playoffs. He signed with the St. Louis Blues just days after the season ended and was assigned to its AHL affiliate. Former Black Bear Marty Kariya plays for the Rivermen as does former Portland Pirate Trent Whitfield.

Tyler is hoping to continue a career in pro hockey next season.

Apparently the sun is always shining in Orono.

How about a story on how much $$ it cost Umaine NOT to make the NCAAs this year, and how that loss of money will affect the program's bottom line?

Or do a little digging to see when the last time a Frozen Four team failed to make it into their league playoffs the next spring?

Or a year by year comparison of goals scored/allowed, winning percentage, graduation rates between the last five classes recruited by Walsh and the first five recruited by Whitehead?

If you're going to cover the program, then cover the program.
