Trophy collecting

Hockey East announced its year end awards on Thursday in Boston.

Click here to see the list

Former Maine goalie Ben Bishop was named to the Hockey East Second Team.
Senior defenseman Bret Tyler was named as an honorable mention.

Bishop's year-end stats were not fantastic: 13-18-3, with a 2.43 goals-against and .920 save percentage. But he was the difference in many games down the stretch as Maine finished the season two points shy of of a berth in the league tourney.

Tyler played in all 34 games for Maine and finished second in team scoring with eight goals and 12 assists.

Bishop is currently trying to help the Peoria Rivermen into the AHL playoffs. He signed with the St. Louis Blues just days after the season ended and was assigned to its AHL affiliate. Former Black Bear Marty Kariya plays for the Rivermen as does former Portland Pirate Trent Whitfield.

Tyler is hoping to continue a career in pro hockey next season.

Apparently the sun is always shining in Orono.

How about a story on how much $$ it cost Umaine NOT to make the NCAAs this year, and how that loss of money will affect the program's bottom line?

Or do a little digging to see when the last time a Frozen Four team failed to make it into their league playoffs the next spring?

Or a year by year comparison of goals scored/allowed, winning percentage, graduation rates between the last five classes recruited by Walsh and the first five recruited by Whitehead?

If you're going to cover the program, then cover the program.

Hey Mr. Wildcat worshiper hiding behind the "KeepWhitehead" handle do this research....
Your pussycats our out of the dance yet again by Notre Dame 7-3!! Is that 87 years of hockey without a title?? My only question of course is the years, I believe it's actually more. Yes we have Whitehead for the time being, but we also have a work study student who dusts off 2 National Championship trophies every month, and you have...well you have Umile 'nuf said. He's getting more of a free ride than Whitehead so like your trophy shelf you have nothing.
As the UNH website exclaims: (with updated numbers of course)
"UNH owns a 12-22 all-time record in the NCAA playoffs, which includes a 10-14 all-time record under head coach Dick Umile". Outstanding!

Please no comebacks about we don't have players that get suspended, or into trouble (remember the little brawl incident), or how about you upstanding announcer?? Or any other blah blah blah graduation rates, or whatever else you girls pull out every year when get bounced and say "we're not only about wins and losses"....boo hoo hoo....Point is this is about hockey and winning - IT ALL!
Hey your letters still work UNH - no need to spell that out.
Hey there's always baseball. UNH Baseball undefeated since 1997 - wahoo!!!

Jenn covers the University of Maine for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram.

A former Portland Pirates beat writer who has covered two winter Olympics for the paper, she will tackle the Maine beat for a fourth year this season.

She has the empty coffee cups, and turnpike mileage receipts littering her

Though she is a graduate of rival New Hampshire, she almost never thinks of that 1999 hockey game anymore.
