Maine football wins season opener

Maine beat Monmouth 21-14 to pick up a win its season opener Saturday night under the lights at Morse Field.

Quarterback Michael Brusko picked up 109 rushing yards on 16 carries in his debut as Maine's starter.

Tailback Jhamal Fluellen had another 129 yards on 25 carries.

Maine scoring plays:

Brusko: 8-yard run on Maine's first drive.
Linebacker Mark Masterson: 50-yard punt return in the first quarter.
Fluellen: 12-yard run in the third quarter

Devin McNeil went 3-for-3 on extra points.

A former Portland Pirates beat writer who has covered two winter Olympics for the paper, Jenn will expand her beat this year to include the University of Southern Maine, St. Joseph's College, Bowdoin College, the University of New England, and Southern Maine Community
College.

She will continue to cover the
University of Maine Black Bears, the state's only division one program.
