CNN: Collins campaign a rare success among Republicans
Here's an interesting CNN analysis comparing the political fortunes of U.S. Sen. Susan Collins and U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole of North Carolina. The story points out that Collins appears to be one of the few embattled Republican senators who could survive the forthcoming Democratic wave.

I think it is tragic that Maine voters see susan collins as a moderate republican, when she has been a rubber stamp for bush these last 8 years. She has managed to dupe the populace into voting against their own interetests. If we want to talk only of fiscal constraint (which is what most republicans hold most dear) the last 8 years have done more harm to the balance sheet of the US than any other presidency. We as americans lack vision and long term planning not only on financial terms, but more importantly on moral terms which in the long run serve to guide us into decisions which for the most part make good sense. For example, the bush admin cut social spending, which forced some counties in the US to cut vaccination funding??? But, we will of course still pay for inpatient treatment of preventible diseases. so much for financial constraint.
I hope a miracle occurs and collins along with the republican who have done so much harm to the US and thus to the world, are voted out of office so we can get on with fixing the harm of the last 8 years.

There is a mystique that has been created by Susan Collins with the help of money and friends
that somehow she is a moderate and a maverick when it comes to her own republican party. It is a perception of her that is woefully inaccurate. The truth is there are none so blind as those who will not see.

Still two weaks to go. Collins support is very soft. Once her positions on energy, the economy, and Iraq are explained many supporters change their minds.

Collins is a moderate, the only Senator to stray from her party more is our own Olympia Snowe.
There are important reasons that she is ahead in the polls. She stands up for her constituents, her staff is extremely responsive, she has a perfect voting record, she supports alternative energy, she just wrote the bill redefining and strengthening oversight of government contracting to private companies, she passed the 9/11 reforms, she turned the USPS around, the list goes on.
Not to mention Mainers don't like false out of state attack ad's telling them what to believe. Collins' record speaks for itself and Mainers understand that.

To james;
yes, collins probably has done a good job helping mainers- so has allen. the test is who represents the entire state better. clearly maine is against the war she voted for. also against the tax cuts she voted for. against far right judges who threaten to overturn roe v wade.
allen would be a positive, progressive voice in a obama administration while susan would be a roadblock with her best friends mccain and lieberman. she is wrong on all the big issues that senators have alot of influence. allen would be are best representative.
