Video: Allen/Collins Endorsement Interviews

It's a long-standing newspaper tradition - with each election cycle comes the endorsement of local candidates.
And unless the newspaper's editorial staff likes to shoot from the hip, they usually bring the candidates in for an interview.

With this year's interview we decided to bring the video camera in on the discussion.

Here are a few snippets of the hour-long interview with the Press Herald's editorial board and U.S. Rep. Tom Allen, (D - Maine), and Sen. Susan Collins, (R-Maine), who are locked in a tightening race for one of Maine's Senate seats.

In these three clips the candidate discuss the recent economic rescue package that Congress voted on, fixing the economy going forward and their own records in D.C. and the realities of bipartisanship on Capitol Hill.

The sad thing is that these are the only two candidates we have to choose from.

They both voted YES on the recent bailout package. 700 BILLION dollars of which a significant portion goes into the pockets (and their spa resorts) of the greedy and irresponsible executives who are (mostly) responsible for the failures in the banking industry.

Both were suckered by the shock tactics of lobbyists and Pennsylvania Avenue. This happened at 9/11 and it's happening now - huge bills (over 400 pages to read) are passed with almost no question. Before it was the patriot act which destroyed countless civil rights by allowing federal agencies like the FBI, CIA and Homeland Security search, seize, arrest and hold without bail, warrant or reason. No one notices because the bills are written to be longer than an encyclopedia but the shock of the situation "forces" our congressmen and women to "act fast before it's too late." B.S.

Do you really think that either of these two people fully read, examined and understood the implications of a FOUR HUNDRED PAGE LONG bill that crossed their desks in less than a week?!?!

No.

And now we hear news reports of the executives that received the money spending it at exclusive spa resorts, wasting hundreds of thousands of dollars - and that's all that LEAKED to the public.

What should have been done? Don't use that money to bail out irresponsible companies. Let them fail and use the money to help the people who were dependent on them for mortgages and stocks and hurt by this crisis.

700,000,000,000$ could put every American through college. 700 Billion could feed every starving American. 700 BILLION could put a huge chunk into the deficit. 700 Billion could be invested in medicine, saving hundreds of thousands of lives. We could END poverty and END hunger and END ignorance and END sickness with SEVEN HUNDRED BILLION DOLLARS!

Nah... let's just send it all to an elite group of men who are still doing fine financially after this economic disaster and once their done buying their mansions and super models, they'll eventually come and round, feeling generous and allow some of it to TRICKLE DOWN. Yea... that's a better idea.

Well done Washington and well done Susan Collins and Tom Allen.
