Maine Superdelegate endorses Obama

Marianne Stevens, the vice chairwoman of Maine's Democratic Party, announced today that she would support Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill.

Maine has 10 superdelegates. Stevens and Democratic Party Chairman John Knutson will support Obama. Gov. John Baldacci and former Gov. Ken Curtis have endorsed Clinton.

Democratic Reps. Tom Allen and Michael Michaud and former Sen. George Mitchell have not endorsed (Michaud had supported Edwards).

Sam Spencer, a Portland developer and DNC member, will remain neutral.

Rita Moran, the state's second DNC member, has said she will throw her support to Obama or Clinton. For now, she is neutral.

Knutson gets to appoint a 10th superdelegate at Maine's state Democratic Party convention in May.

Here is Stevens' statement.

“After considerable thought I am proud to give my support and endorsement to Senator Barack Obama. He has won eleven straight contests since February 5, including the Maine caucuses. His success and the overwhelming number of voters who have chosen change helped me make this decision. He's run a smart and exciting campaign and he will bring us to victory in November.

“I was in High School and a volunteer in a Democratic campaign office when I met Bobby Kennedy. He gave us all hope in very troubling times. Barack Obama gives me the same sense of hope for our future. The numbers of new voter registrations and the enthusiasm of younger voters to stand for Obama at our caucuses was very encouraging as well and speaks well for his chances in the general election.”

It's too bad he isn't just endorsing because Maine voted for him.

The whole superdelegate thing is a joke. I thought our country was based on one person gets one vote and that's it. One person's vote should not be any more or less valuable than another's. And while we're at it, let's go back to a primary system in Maine. I don't like voting out in the open in front of my friends and neighbors at a caucus.
