Arizona State University -- Obama Honorary Degree Hypocrisy
Posted by Peter Hayward

Edited 1:40 PM to correct factual error
Edited: 4/12/20 to include list of past recipients

An Arizona State University web site proudly announces:

"Arizona State University is pleased to announce that President Barack Obama will give the commencement address at University Commencement on Wednesday, May 13, 7 p.m. in Sun Devil Stadium. ... ASU Commencement will be broadcast live over the Internet and on ASUtv, so that everyone can watch it, particularly those family and friends who cannot attend the event in person."

As had been reported widely, and been debated by some, the President will also give the commencement address at Notre Dame University and will receive an honorary degree in Juris Prudence.

In its infinite wisdom, however, ASU has decided NOT to confer upon the President an honorary degree.

Apparently the committee which invites the speaker is not the same committee which makes the decision regarding whom will be honored with an honorary degree.

The Associated Press reports that when ASU was asked about what appears to be a dis of the President, Sharon Keeler, University Spokeswoman said: "It's our practice to recognize an individual for his body of work, somebody who's been in their position for a long time," ... "His body of work is yet to come. That's why we're not recognizing him with a degree at the beginning of his presidency."

An editorial in the East Valley Tribune of Arizona notes that while ASU has conferred honorary degrees on many long term politicians over the years, ASU has conferred degrees on politicians with more meager achievements than President Obama including "Barry Goldwater ...only eight years into his three decades as a U.S. senator...Sandra Day O'Connor ... just three years in her 25 years on the U.S. Supreme Court...and Kim Campbell, the first woman to be Canadian prime minister."

The full list of past recipients.

So, Arizona State University awards honorary degrees for "his body of work, somebody who's been in [his] position for a long time;" an Arizona Senator by serving eight years, yes; a woman becoming the first female Canadian prime minister, yes: a woman serving three years on the US Supreme Court, yes: a man being elected in a landslide the first African-American President, no; the same President tackling, apparently successfully so far the worst financial crisis in America since the depression, no.

Of course, I am not suggesting that this decision might be a throwback to Arizona Governor Evan Mecham's rescinding of the state holiday honoring Martin Luther King. (An action defended then by John McCain.)

And of course, I am not suggesting that the decision has anything to do with the fact that Arizona is home to Senator John McCain. That would simply be too simple an answer.

The answer is that it sheer stupidity and hypocrisy.

Mr Hayward,

I suggested to Mr Cutler in March that he wait about 12 hours after a fellow blogger post before posting so others could see his blog.

I am a fellow cartoonist who lives in Maine and stared out like Pat Moening did, doing cartoons on a website. After a while, my cartoons were noticed and I was picked up by a newspaper holding company.

For a cartoonist like Pat to prosper, his cartoons need to be seen, and your post effectively over-wrote his.

You might consider offering Pat this courtesy.

BTW, I don't agree with your post; ASU has the right to do what they want. Liberals like you can't dictate to universities what you think they she do, regardless of what they might have done in the past.

Please fact check before you publish. Arizona State University (the topic of your article) is not the same as The Univeristy of Arizona from which you are quoting the honorary degree guidelines.

Thank you. Will delete right now.

Hayward: Your liberal slobbering is disgusting. ASU, to date anyway, has free reign to decide as they choose. Until perhaps, the Messiah takes control there too, as he seems want to do elsewhere in our once free country. When he comes for you and your rights, what will you say, do??

Arizona State is actually a pretty good school, ranked high nationally in several areas, from the arts to the sciences.

As an alumnus, I have to smile at the school's refusal to hand out this honorary degree, and chuckle at those of you who seem aghast at the perceived slight.

I thought we were post-race? Handing out a degree simply for being "the first African-American President" says we're not.

Going to a good college and getting elected to public office actually aren't what one should consider a "body of work."

"Tackling, apparently successfully so far" is just weaselly talk. Any president would tackle the financial crisis, and it seems a bit early for a judgment on Obama's success. No points.

Rather than regurgitating sound bites, you might also consider researching the qualifications of those prior recipients a bit more thoroughly. To cite one example, you imply Goldwater's only achievement was being a two-term senator (not too shabby in itself, actually), but fail to mention he was a pilot in World War II. Where's Obama's military service?

We have become a country where some people are called "heroes" for doing their jobs, others are famous for being famous, and millions camp in front of their televisions every night drooling over "reality" shows.

Good on ya, ASU, for actually giving it some thought.

fellowcartoonist – Thanks for trying to help me get my cartoons noticed. Usually my stuff just provokes hate mail along the lines of “you suck!” It was kind of a shock to see someone sticking up for me …

That said, don’t be too hard on Peter H for bumping my post. Fact is, I’ve personally advised Peter not to be concerned about this issue. In an open blog like the PH Post, it just doesn’t seem fair to expect the participants to delay their entries. I believe that the PPH is working on some website improvements that will help reduce this over-posting effect in the future.

Peter – I generally find your opinions well reasoned, even if I disagree with you. In this case, however, I think you’re coming up short. Obviously, Obama has made an historic achievement (that’s kind of like saying water is wet). Still – that doesn’t change the fact that his political resume is extremely short. Just a single term of office at the national level, with very little legislation attached to his name. To suggest that his policies have already succeeded 3 months into his term reveals a lack of objectivity. Likewise, I don’t think it’s fair to describe his election as a “landslide”. Although there’s no formal definition for this over-used term, I don’t believe that most political historians regard his victory as a landslide.

fellowcartoonist – I’d like to ask you some questions about your experiences as a cartoonist. Send me an email if you’re so inclined.

And I take issue with your statement that the East Valley Tribune stated that "ASU has conferred degrees on politicians with more meager achievements than President Obama." That's not what they wrote.
