A conversation, or a broadcast?
Posted by Arthur Fink

The headline announcing this blog series says "conversations about Maine issues", but it it appears that I and the other bloggers are broadcasting messages, with very little response coming back.

In one post I suggested that "sign season" is about visual pollution from campaign signs, and that it represents a disrespect for voters. Are you as concerned as I am about people making voting decisions just based on these silly signs that litter our streets?

What about shoplifting at Micucci's -- or any other local business?

And how much industrial noise is acceptable in residential parts of our city?

The Press Herald has given all of us an exciting opportunity with this blog. Will you use it?

No, Arthur, I am not concerned with election signs during election years.

We cannot have expect America to be pristine; we have freedom of speech, and signs represent that freedom, just as your blog does.

Regarding the noise of the oil tankers transiting the 3/4 of a mile to Peaks, Peaks Island is in the harbor, period. There is no border to the harbor if you look at a US gov marine chart.

100 years ago, the inhabitants of Peaks were people making their living off the sea; to the extent that Peaks was THEN residential, it was because that was where those people sleptt.

Portland is a working harbor; it has been since it was named Falmouth, and noise comes from working harbors. Noise free environments are available, but not with nice views of Portland HARBOR.

We're out here, Arthur, and I listen and agree with you. Unfortunately I've found that unless you say something controversial (usually a particular political slant) most people don't take the time to respond.
The signs are a nuisance but I think I have more important issues with a few other things that are going on.
Any kind of pollution is awful - but most prople ignore unless it is bothering them. Keep writing!
