Motherhood and Politics
Posted by Elizabeth Kellett
Today was the first day of school in our area and I watched as the neighborhood children boarded the morning bus. Memories of the hectic and exciting first day jitters came flooding back as I remembered the school days of my own two now-grown children. I thought of the struggle to mesh our work and school schedules, and the critical after-school babysitters. My husband and I balanced the conflicts of scout meetings, sports activities, the kids' social calendars, work, school meetings and the building of our own house and gardens.
It was a wonderfully difficult time in our lives and sometimes we failed miserably. We struggled to buy school clothes and pay a sitter. But we ate a homemade dinner together every night and we were there for our kids and their friends.
When my children were babies though, I was a stay at home Mother. I wanted to welcome them into this big, bright world and watch them smile and sleep and grow. Being a Mother is the most important job in the world, even more important than the vice presidency. Motherhood is a commitment to the child and humanity, to nurture and sustain a contributing member of society.
Perhaps a Mother with five children, including a tiny 5 month old handicapped child and a pregnant unwed minor daughter, should be spending more time with her family and not trying to be a partner to the ruler of the most influential country in the free world. Ultimately, either her family or the country is going to get short changed, and I don't think I want to see which one it is.

you mean Palin could never find a baby sitter once she becomes VP? In the scope of political MEN no one ever mentions HIM who has a downs syndrome child--elect a woman and suddenly hell breaks loose if she lets the nest be run by her man or some other paid person--a nurse/nanny. Why the double standard just for women? Why can't men do some nurturing or why no scrutiny about husbands in politics who have needs children?

It's time to get off the discussion of personalities and return to a discussion of issues. Whether Governor Palin could balance the duties of the Vice Presidency should she be elected with the duties of motherhood are not germane and the question would never be asked of a male candidate. The fact that she would be a heart-beat from the presidency, opposes a woman's right to choose, even in the case of rape or incest; supports the economic and foreign policies of the Bush administration, and is a fan of the Roberts, Allito, Scalia, Thomas wing of the Supreme Court should give pause to anyone tired of the last eight years of a failed presidency. The country cannot afford another four years of Bush or Bush Lite.

Exactly. The Palin family has much more important business to handle right now than running for National Office. The new baby needs both Dad and Mom to care for him. His needs are still unknown, but likely he will need more attention than your typical new baby. Bristol needs both Dad and Mom to help her too. If this were Mr Palin running for VP, I'd say the same thing - he too would be needed more at home than in DC.
Since Mrs Palin is only 44, she will still be a qualified candidate in ten years, even more qualified than she is now. The US can wait. The children in the situation cannot. Family First.

There is no double standard here. Many people were also critical of John Edwards' decision to pursue the presidency while his wife was battling cancer. Family does come first.

Family does come first, in my opinion, but that does not mean that a person - man OR woman - should not work outside the home as well. In fact, since the fifties or sixties, in most cases, both men and women have had to work to make ends meet. Governor Palin has done a great job with her lovely family and a great job as Governor of Alaska. This conversation would not be taking place concerning a man running for office.

I see that the Democrats are terrified of Sarah Palin and want to guilt her into staying home!
She'll be an excellent vice president. Go Sarah!!! :)

Those folks worried about mom being away from the kids seem to forget that the VP has a pretty good sized mansion in DC that the whole family will be moving in to when she and McCain are elected.
Sarah will be in a pretty steady contact with the family throughout her terms of office, and will likely be not much more away from her family then she is as Governor.
In fact, she will have a shorter commute to work than the 90 minutes it currently takes her to get to Anchorage.
It is always amusing to me that those leftists who so rabidly defend a woman's right to choose go ballistic when one actually, you know, CHOOSES.
Orwell must be laughing his socks off at the leftists and their double-speak.
Sarah Palin will be an exceptional VP, and an excellent President if she so chooses to run.
Respects,

The reality is that woman often talk about 'wanting it all'. what does that mean? it seems to me that she is beautiful, has a wonderful husband, 5 children, ..she does have it all!! ..already. I agree, she should stay home and take of her family and if she doesn't want to do that, then she should have studied the facts of life harder and not kept getting pregnant. .....
But.....
I also believe abortion is horrible!! ...but woman can have abortions because this is America and we believe in freedom. So, it really doesn't matter what I think Mrs. Palin should do, because I don't know her and this is America so she can do what she wants. And I can too. So I can write in blogs about how selfish, self centered, egotistical and ungrateful some woman are. There are those having abortions and then there are those that have all sorts of children and don't stay home and cherish the time with them. Maybe both these type of woman should have been barren. But we live in an imperfect world. !!!

Perhaps you didn't read my post above.
Mrs. Palin, when she becomes the Vice President, will STILL be able to take care of her children because her family will be living with her in the Vice President's Mansion.

And this author does not see the sexist double-standard she is supporting?
Ok, fine. The women should stay home, barefoot and pregnant.

The right to choose is for life!
Abortion=murder no matter how one looks at it. the Fifth Commandment is "thou shall not kill."

What about the 17 year old daughter being pregnant? She is not the first and won't be the last ! Condoms break, IUD's aren't 100% effective and birth control pills either !! So who are you to judge anyway? Your problem is that she is a Palin!! Daughter of the woman who stole Hillary's "entitled" limelight, this is the bottom line! Accidents happen, teenagers are having sex, Bill Clinton did with a young girl, so what about that?? He was married, she wasn't! He was president of the US, Bristol isn't.
Not only that what you folks need to know is that because little Trigg has Down's doesn't mean he is helpless ! That little boy will grow the way he needs to grow and at his speed. He needs LOVE and from what I can see he has it !! Lot's of it.
I really believe people are being to hard on this woman. In Washington she is 5 mins from her house.Closer than her Alaska office.
Her husband has control of what is going on, plus her daughters. Did you see the little girl wetting her hands and trying to pat her little brothers hair down? Where or who do you think she learned that from?
Come on, what about John Edwards? Let's get a DNA on his baby! How about Bill and Monica? Didn't it do your heart a world of good to see and hear his stories of her being under the desk? He's talking with Arafat at the same time, what do you think that suckers mind was on? Not you and me that is for sure !!? That concerned me more than Sarah Palin ! Then there is Teddy,JFK,brother Robert, Dad's a bootlegger, but do we hear about that? No we don't because they are men! Bill Clinton was asked why he did it and his reply: BECAUSE I CAN !!
I say Sarah Palin you go girl and when you get to Wshington you kick the butts right off these good ole boys. Show them what it's like to multi task and get your job done!! Tend to your family, cook meals, tuck your kids into bed, read a book, give a
bath, feed the animals, check the furnace, get lunches ready for school, do laundry, write your bills out, try and read the paper while the cat is tossing a fur ball at you !! Yes ole boys a new woman is on her way and I can't say that I could be anymore PROUDER of Sarah!! Music to my ears, not a crackling voice of the other woman! Now what was her name?? I have forgotten already, sorry.. Beside's don't blame Sarah, it's Michelle who sent the OTHER woman packing, what do you bet???

Jean, your comments were the wierdest out of everyone's here. You really are clearly having difficulty with your own life. You are approaching this with all of your judgement and with a tragically naive approach you seem to think that adultery is the cause of all of the worlds problems. You should read some history. Humans have ALWAYS been sinners so what really is your point?

Hey! People actually read what I wrote! The power of the pen is awesome! Or is it keyboard?
This election is about who is best for ALL of us - men, women, children and their children's children. You can call me names all you want - left , liberal, or democrat (though I may not be any of those things) - but I am a person, just like you. Maybe we should work together and create a world that supports ALL of us.
Now shut off your puter, go outside, look at the sky and take a breath of air that we all share.

Regardless of whether or not her 5 month old infant with Down Syndrome needs her desperately, Palin is simply not qualified or ready to be President of this country.
Which is to say she is not ready to be Vice President. McCain is 72 and has a history of cancer and a family history of unexpected heart attacks.
I remember some people thought it didn't matter if they voted for Gore or Bush.
Then the wars came and the economy tanked. And it was pretty clear, suddenly, that it did matter who was President.
McCain would continue failed policies of the Bush administration. He also proved his inability to make a sound decision by rashly picking an unfit VP.
