Bristol thoughts and caution recap
Busch03230911.jpg Busch03230922.jpg

Congratulations to Kyle Busch for his second victory at Bristol. This marked the first time he's won twice at any given track. It's also his third top-three finish this year.
Busch03230933.jpgThe last three races have been won by a member of the Busch family. His brother, Kurt, won last week at Vegas and Kyle won the week before that in Atlanta. I'm just glad Shrub didn't take after his brother this week and drive backwards around the track for his victory lap. Seriously, I would be happy if I never saw that again.

There were nine cautions during yesterday's race. Let's take a peek at what happened to bring out each caution:

The first caution was a single-car spin by John Andretti.

The second caution was also brought out by Andretti. He was the first and only car a lap down and during the restart he got a bit loose and went up the track and hit Dave Blaney. Blaney spun and it was crazy that no one hit him. Normally, the first car a lap down would get the lucky dog and get a pass back on the lead lap but because Andretti caused the wreck, he didn't get the lucky dog.

The third caution, thankfully, had nothing to do with Andretti. Michael Waltrip wasn't clear of Todd Bodine and drove up into him. Kevin Harvick's car got quite a bit of damage from that mishap.

I just want to note that those first three cautions happened during commericial breaks. What ever happened to, "If a caution breaks out, we'll break in?"

Juan Pablo Montoya intentionally hit Jamie McMurray sending him spinning which brought out the fourth caution. NASCAR warned Montoya to not be so rough.

If McMurray didn't feel like a ping pong ball after the Montoya scuffle, he surely must have after he got hit again, bringing out the fifth caution of the day. This time it involved Sam Hornish and Casey Mears. I'm not so sure what happened exactly (I was fixing something in the kitchen) but if I was a gambling woman, my guess would be that this is completely Sam Hornish's fault given his track record of wrecking... but please do let me know.

Ok. Where are we...oh yes, caution number six. The yellow flag waved due to debris on the track from Brian Vickers blowing a tire.

Kevin Harvick blew a tire and went up and hit the outside wall bringing out the seventh caution of the race. The lucky dog went to none other than Dale Earnhardt Jr. This was his third lucky dog of the race. Yeah, three. At Atlanta he was the recipient of two of them. This is not a very good trend, Junior.

David Stremme got loose and spun out which brought out the eighth caution.

Logano03230911.jpg

And finally, the ninth caution was brought out because rookie Joey Logano's engine quit on him with about 7 laps remaining. Logano ended the day in 38th position. Luckily, he remains within the top-35 in the point standings unlike rookie, Scott Speed who is now on the outside looking in. Speed ended the day in 28th spot and is now 36th in the point standings. I think it was a fairly quiet day for Speed though. I didn't see much of him anyway.

How about a shout out to Marcos Ambrose who finished tenth. He had a great finish and a solid run all day. Great job Ambrose!

Overall, I thought the racing was pretty good. What did you think of the race?

The race was terribly boring. You don't need the wrecks of the pre-ruined track but you need competition. The only thing in question was whether Kyle was going to have a flat or have a mess up on pit road. It is beginning to look like the "lucky dog" was invented to keep Jr. on the lead lap. NA$CAR has done everything in their power to help Jr. win but he has not kept his end of the bargain.

The people that say that this or other recent races at Bristol are "boring" need to get a life. There was plenty of competition. I guess "Ken" would say there was competition when Cale Yarborough led all 500 laps in his win in the 70s or that I think it was Richard Petty who finished about 5 laps ahead of the field in another race. Races are races. Some are very competitive and some are not. Kyle has it going on right now. He is spanking the competition. It has nothing to do with Bristol. I was getting tired of the old Bristol with 20 green laps followed by 10 caution laps followed by 20 green laps followed by 10 caution laps. The last few years had brought about 18-20 cautions and just about 20-35 of green flag laps. The only way to get around someone was to push them out of the way and cause a wreck. What racing is that? Bristol is one of the greatest tracks on the planet and the repaving thing helped the races from becoming just crash fests. If that's what people want to see then they should really quit NASCAR racing and take up Demo Derby sports because to say Bristol is boring is to say a jet fighter at an airshow is boring. It's just not true. And the more people say this stuff is boring the more I think they need to move to wrestling alligators because that's the only thing that will satisfy them.

Fox never has come back from a commercial break for a wreck. That was NBC/TNT's gig.

FROM JEN: Thanks for the clarification.

I'm with you, Dan. I used to not like Bristol much because I never felt like I could keep up with who was where because of all the wreckage. It is so much better now that cars are able to pass.

For those fans that have never been to Bristol, those drivers have to be a little bit nuts to drive that fast on that short track. It is unbelievable.

Glad too see someone mentioning Jrs. lucky dogs, the two at Alanta should actually be five.Three times when Jr. got just over 30 seconds behind the leader & was about too be lapped they threw the Yellow, the last one they threw they said R.Gordon may have scraped the wall. I can't believe no one has picked up on this.

Two things:

1) Jr.'s Lucky Dogs: Does anyone remember when Kyle Busch got it 8 times during a race at Watkins Glen a few years ago? There were no conspiracy theorists about that. Why does Jr. get it when he gets it three times?

2) Earnhardt himself: Earnhardt must get it in gear. Eury needs to be replaced and Hendrick should do what is necessary to get the #88 team to perform. The new car has changed the sport so much and he can no longer rely on strong finishes at Daytona and Talladega to stabilize his seasons. Jr. needs to evolve as a race car driver to improve on more tracks. Then, and only then will he be a championship caliber driver.

On a side note, for once I would like to hear the announcers say that Dale is complaining of a "tight" race car.

For the sake of clarity, it was 5 lucky dogs. He recovered to finish 9th. Still rediculous. I was in Dover the first time they ever used a lucky dog. Newman received one with just a 100 laps to go, got to pit without competition, and then went on to win. I don't think nascar intended for the lucky dog to be used as an advantage.

About this blog:
I am hopeful that this will be a place where people can air their two cents' worth about a race, catch up on the gossip and share their opinions on the rules and regulations of NASCAR. I have always felt that there has been a need for such a place in Maine and that this blog helps to fill the void.
