Homestead thoughts

Johnson111708.jpg

Congratulations to Jimmie Johnson for winning his third-straight Sprint Cup Championship. He's only the second driver to win three Cup championships in a row. Cale Yarborough was the first to do so back in 1978, 30 years ago.

I have one beef about the post-race festivities. You would think that after such a long season for us devoted race fans that sit down each week to watch racing, that they would have allowed us viewers at home to see Johnson's burnout. But they didn't. We got back from commercial break to see him standing up on his car. Thanks a lot.

Bowyer1117082.jpg

Congratulations to my man, Clint Bowyer, for winning his first Nationwide Series Championship. Seriously, did NASCAR just want Carl Edwards to win the championship with that late-race caution flag? With 9 laps to go, they threw the caution and said someone got into the wall but never showed who or how bad it was. Or maybe they did and I just missed it.

All I've got to say is thank God for teammates. Scott Wimmer was behind him on the restart and helped a lot in staving off the cars behind Bowyer.

Edwards1117082.jpg

Twice a bridesmaid this year for Carl Edwards. Despite his nine wins in the Sprint Cup and seven wins in the Nationwide Series, he managed to finish second in the point standings in both series. He was so close to winning the championship in each though. He's probably the only person wishing that there were one more weekend of racing.

Here are some other random thoughts of the weekend:

-- Dale Earnhardt Junior is his own worst enemy. He stalled the car on pit road and had to be pushed to get it restarted. On the restart, he had to start last car on the lead lap. Then, with about 18 laps remaining in the race he had a brake caliper break, ending his day and also a visit at the Waldorf Astoria in New York for the NASCAR banquet. Junior finished the race in 41st position. Hopefully he will have a better season next year.

-- After the amazing first half of the season that Kyle Busch had, I am happy that he made it to the top-ten in the point standings. I am looking forward to his speech at the NASCAR banquet.

-- It's fitting that Kurt Busch blew more tires for the season finale race. At least he and his team are consistent. On top of blowing tires, he got penalized for a commitment cone violation, too fast entering pit road, too fast exiting pit road and pitting too soon. I guess if you're going to break a rule, you might as well go big.

What did you think of the racing/results of this past weekend?

Pretty good race. Johnson got himself in the mix enough to make it interesting, though I didn't like his complaining that everyone was racing too hard. Congrats to JJ fans.

Junior should quit driving a car. He proving to be a smart businessman and team owner and perhaps that's where he should spend his time. He may do better next year, but I will be watching Mark Martin at HMS. A championship for Martin would be huge.

The truck championship was not decided until practically the last lap and the Nationwide point difference between 1st and 2nd was only about 21 I believe. And no Chase concept! Those two were much more fun to watch. They say they might "tweak" the Chase for next year. Oh boy how exciting.

All JGR teams are going to New York. Us Stewart fans dreaded the start of the season thinking Gibbs would struggle with the Toyota and really enjoyed it when they proved to be so successful. We are looking forward to the new Stewart team next year. Stewart-Haas Office Depot shirts are supposed to be available in the Nascar store now.

I am also pleased that Kyle will be honored and I'll bet his speech will be funny.

Oh, Lord.....guide us wise one, racefan. I disagree with almost everything you have stated. I no longer rely on your counsel, so I wish you luck with your predictions, and most of all, YOUR FANTASY picks. I am sure, along with DW's picks, the two of you can have a GRAND time. The fact that JR will not be in NY is sad and your belief that he should manage and buy, rather than drive, is BOGUS. There is obviously a confidence/Hendrick Org., problem for him, but he IS a good driver and will come back eventually as a supr star driver. CARL was the best driver this year and JJ only won the title because of a good Pit Crew Chief. That is the name of the game, but watch out next year.

Congrats for your mans championship.
I want to see Kyle wear his glasses to the podium at the banquet. Now thats funny.
Jr stalled the car because his team forgot to inform him it was a 2 tire stop and not a 4 tire, and im thinking driving style can not cause a wheel bearing failure(which caused the brake issue). Lets not be to fast to beat jr up, his season was still an improvement over his last few years. With competitors like JJ Carl and Kyle, everyones season looked pretty dismall.

I think Jimmy might have played a part in winning that championship.

As far as JJ playing a part in his championship, he certainly drove the car. But how many times did Knaus get him up front? From Phoenix earlier this year with pit strategy, to Atlanta with the tires late in the race, to the two tire stop in Homestead, Knaus is a HUGE part of JJ's success.
Jr obviously can still drive well. He is up front a lot, but unlike Knaus and JJ, they make bad decisions. Something to work on for '09 or something for Hendrick to make happen.
I wish Tony all the luck in the world for his raceteam. I think owner drivers are some of the coolest parts of Nascar. When was the last time Bob Kraft took the field to win a Super Bowl?

Texaco Oil posted a net earning of $23 billon and they can't afford to sponsor a race team?

Perhaps the oil companies are doing well, but most other corporations are not. It would be nice if all the major oil companies sponsored our favorite teams, but that isn't likely. I don't pretend to know as much about Nascar as some of you, but I do know about business. :)

On the news it was stated that GM is not only dropping sponsorship of golf tournaments but 2 Nascar races as well.

Yeah, it looks discouraging as far as sponsorships. Perhaps, being a believer of making the best out of bad news, this will get Nascar back to its basics. True racing without a lot of corporate interference or influence. Come soon, Daytona.

I'd love to see that Ms. Boogity, but I fear Nascar is too wrapped up in corporate sponsors to go back now. Loss of those sponsorships could spell the demise of racing, as we know it anyway.

Is this blog pretty much shutting down until Feb.'s Daytona? Please let me know, folks. Thanks.

From Jen: Just taking a break. That's all. I'll be back. And it will be before February. I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving!

Still a lot of interesting Nascar news even if there is no racing.

Nationwide banquet will be shown tomorrow. Maybe Kyle will wear his glasses.

DEI and Ganassi have merged.

Stewart-Haas has hired several DEI employees who were laid off.

Kyle B will probably drive a full season in both series next year.

Rockingham is not Nascar sanctioned any more. Close to most teams and would be a terrific place for testing. Goodyear is allowed to invite some teams for tire testing on certain tracks.

??? Don't know, but don't know why it should. Lots of interesting news even if it's not about races.

Nationwide banquet being televised tomorrow. (Kyle B.does not wear his glasses judging by the pictures I've seen.)

Mark Martin to drive part time in Nationwide for JR Motorsports next season.

Tickets available everywhere including the normally sold out August Sharpie at Bristol.

Dave Rogers will be reinstated as crew chief at JGR if Nascar renews his license after a hearing.

Stewart-Haas still looking for sponsorship for half of the next season for Ryan Newman. All Cup drivers that finished in the top twelve have secured full sponsorships.

Kyle B. has been given permission to drive all Nationwide races next year as well as Cup if he wants to.

A Sprint car driven to 2 wins by Greg Biffle will be auctioned off next month.

Lots of people laid off from teams are being hired by others.

Rockingham is no longer a Nascar sanctioned track, is not far from Charlotte, and would be a great place to test. Goodyear will still be allowed to invite teams to tire testing on some tracks.

About this blog:
I am hopeful that this will be a place where people can air their two cents' worth about a race, catch up on the gossip and share their opinions on the rules and regulations of NASCAR. I have always felt that there has been a need for such a place in Maine and that this blog helps to fill the void.
