Talladega thoughts

Stewart1006081.jpg

Congratulations to Tony Stewart for his first win of the season and his first win at Talladega. He stayed out of the couple of big ones that took place and came out ahead. He also had the biggest gain in the point standings going from 11th to 7th. Great going Tony!

Here are some other thoughts:

-- Since when do they allow NASCAR officials to pull debris off from racecars during a red flag? The official was making his way to another car but they cut to commerical or something before we could watch him do it again. Did anyone else see that?

-- Carl Edwards pushing his teammate, Greg Biffle in the center of the corner = the BIG ONE. Several Chasers were involved in the mistake by Edwards: Dale Earnhardt Jr., Matt Kenseth, Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch. Busch had the least damage of the Chasers involved in this wreck. Dave Blaney, Reed Sorenson and Travis Kvapil were also involved in the pileup.

-- Sometimes I think the announcers make things up as they go. Since when is it ever legal to pass below the yellow line at any point during a race at a superspeedway? That's what one of the announcers said when Regan Smith went below the yellow line to pass Stewart on the last lap. Whoever said it was wrong and it looks as though NASCAR placed Smith in the 18th position.

-- Jeff Gordon had a rough day when he got tangled up with David Reutimann who blew a tire. Gordon managed to get back out on the track only to blow up later in the race.

-- The theme of the day was blown tires. Below are a few of the drivers that had tires give way. I may have missed a few though.

-- Brian Vickers blew a right front tire and took out several drivers, Martin Truex Jr., Tony Raines, Jamie McMurray, Kasey Kahne, Mike Skinner and David Gilliland.

-- I was hoping Mike Wallace would have a good race but he also blew a tire. He seemed to be having a pretty good day, too, running in the top-five when he had his misfortune.

-- Denny Hamlin took a HARD hit when his right front tire blew. He went like a rocket up towards that outside wall. I was glad to see him get out of the car okay.

Here are the race results if you want to see where your driver finished.

What did you think of the race?

it was an exciting race, that is for sure.

Congrats to Smoke, I was happy to see he had won after all.

I am curious for the answers you asked as well as this one. During the first red flag, the in car camera showed Carl Edwards dumping a bottle of water in his lap, then throwing the bottle out the window. Why would he dump water in his lap?

Congrats, racefan, on the Smoke win. Not sure how I feel about the final results. I would be interested in hearing from others on that. As far as Cousin Carl, he is in the dog house right now, causing a big pileup of chasers, because he drafted coming out of a corner. Ughhhhh. I am disappointed in him and feeling sad for Jr., who was doing well. Oh well.

I saw Edwards throw his water bottle out of his window, too. What is up with that?

It's last man standing at Talladega. The driving at the fall race is always more aggressive. Very happy to see Tony finally get a win for the season and at Talladega where he has been 2nd so many times. Wonder which people he was mad at yesterday. He said during his post race interview at the media center," And here come the rats looking for the cheese. Glad you could make it"when some new press people walked in.

Would like to have been at the Roush team meeting this morning. Cat in the Hat was not pleased.Edwards needs to calm down and think before he acts.Junior had a negative comment about how some people know how to bump draft and some don't. Jr tried bump drafting Mike Wallace once into turn 1 at Dega. Wallace got into Jimmie and caused the big one that time. Jimmie got the blame for it for long time, but I see now they have the story straight.

Drivers throw water bottles out the window all the time. I have seen it before and always wondered why they do that. Never thought to ask. I'll go find out.

Did not see the official take the debris off a car. If it was tire rubber, Goodyear was requesting all pieces be given to them so they can take it and study the compound. Cannot blame the blown tires on the COT or Goodyear this time. Jr made the comment that Hoosier's blew in the ARCA race. Can't be the track either. That track is super smooth since they repaved it.

Yes, it is the last man standing at Talladega. Lucky for Tony that half of the field was out of the race. The green, white, checkered would have been much more eventful!

Two big ones and big win. Smoke show and its about time. Of course, it going to be bad when I have to put all the 20 car hats and stuff in the attic. I figure that the Old Spice 14 hats and shirts will look pretty cool.

#14 merchandise is supposed to be available in December for Xmas sales. I for one cannot wait to switch to that deep red color and stop wearing orange.

You are right,BBB, but I liked seeing the DEI cars up there. As much as I am a Smoke fan and am happy to see him finally win, I always enjoy seeing someone get their first Cup win.

About this blog:
I am hopeful that this will be a place where people can air their two cents' worth about a race, catch up on the gossip and share their opinions on the rules and regulations of NASCAR. I have always felt that there has been a need for such a place in Maine and that this blog helps to fill the void.
